4x nominee and WINNER at the 2024 Ambie Awards. Host Simon Kent Fung explores the life of Alana Chen, a 24-year-old woman who disappeared from Boulder, Colorado in 2019. Alana left behind two dozen journals chronicling a deep faith, love of fashion, and dream of becoming a nun. She also harbored a secret. At 14, she confessed to her priest that she was attracted to women and was instructed not to tell her parents. Over the next seven years, Alana covertly received conversion therapy which her family believes played a role in her fate. Simon, who sought to change his sexual orientation through conversion therapy for nearly a decade in his efforts to become a priest, is compelled to understand the truth of what happened to Alana—and finally face what happened to him. “Dear Alana,” is an unraveling mystery and a poignant spiritual memoir about teenage rebellion and spiritual manipulation, the price we pay to belong and the systems that pay no price at all. ****Named one of the best podcasts of 2023 by Apple, KQED, and Lifehacker, and critically acclaimed by The Guardian, the CBC, and People Magazine. Incredibly Powerful and Touching

It is so important to shine a light on these kinds of heartbreaking issues that continue to happen. This podcast is another brave step forward towards our deep, shared, and beautiful humanity. Every living being is equally deserving of love and acceptance! Much love and peace to Alanna and Simon and their loved ones. Alanna will always be a saint to me. Simon, your vulnerability combined with amazing journalism brought me to tears listening to this. I am so incredibly grateful. Please listen to this story, I highly recommend it 🌈 💖Love is love 💖
Future Chaplain’s gratitude
Apr 14
As a gay seminary student planning to be a chaplain, this podcast ripped me apart. Being gay, I and always have always believed in the love of the Creator for all of us, no matter who we are or what we believe, uncertain not because of who we love. We are here to embrace one another’s differences and acknowledge them gracefully. Grateful cannot state how I feel about this podcast. To Joyce and the Chen family: My heart is with you now and always. Simon: you mentioned feeling abandoned by God in part 8…I hope you’ll remember that when we suffer, we are never alone. My biggest reminder of that is Mary of Nazareth and the immense pain she felt watching her son brutally be murdered in front of her own eyes. She was not alone. None of them were abandoned, and neither are we in these moments of despair. We are so loved and we are doing God’s work by being who we are and being openly proud of being gay. God wants every creation to be fully alive and in order to do that we have to be ourselves and embrace what God made us. Plus, Jesus and his earthly ministry centered on those who have their backs against the wall and are marginalized and that includes all LGBTQ plus people. You are so loved! I send my love to you now and alway as well. Peace to you all.
Great!
