Continuing our discussion on The Red Sleeve: The King’s women. That is the life of a palace court lady. Not allowed to live by your own rules because you belong to the King. As a child, Sung Deok-Im witnessed the funeral of a royal concubine that was favoured by the King and was told, that is the dream of any Court Lady to have the honour of being chosen as a royal concubine. But Deok Im wants to live her life freely, something that will not be possible as a concubine. Still holding onto her dreams and aspirations, she happens to meet Crown Prince Yi San, at first unbeknownst to her and slowly begins to grow affection towards him while he quickly falls in love with her. The crown prince eventually becomes King Jeongjo and now desires Sung Deok-Im to become his concubine, but she refuses. Did I mention how dangerous the palace is for a court lady favoured by a King with enemies and other wives? She is now having to choose to hold onto her sense of freedom and her red sleeves or give her heart to a King who cannot truly give her all of his heart back.
