Wow. What a load of crap. (Source: a 21yr Search consultant)

I listened to the first 3 episodes and she really is wrong about so much and gives really bad information especially for new recruiters. For example.

“Recruiters/headhunters and HR don’t like each other”. This old school Management Recruiters or Robert Half training. This is wrong. Are there hard HR managers to work with? Yes. There are also hard hiring managers to work with. You know what? Don’t work with anyone you can’t get along with. I have great relationships with many HR managers. They feed me searches with the hiring managers name and number.

How about “You have to strong arm your clients”. What??! No you don’t. That’s not being a consultant and industry expert. That’s being a transactional bully that only cares about the deal. This attitude and style will lead to placements but not long term relationships.

She also talks about “how much fun” the job is. She is right about that. I love this job but her idea of “fun” is unethical and borders on theft. She says she loves taking clients and candidates out to lunch or dinner because the company pays for it. In fact she says she tells them to bring their wife and kids along because who cares the company is paying for it. I bet he company loves that. Wasting company money. Wow. You as s new recruiter should definitely follow that advice. (Sarcasm) Now, where she really crosses the line is she alluded to bringing them to her (maybe her family’s) restaurant. That was mind blowing.

My favorite though has to be from the 3rd episode. She is taking about fees and how if a company doesn’t pay her fee that she’ll tell everyone how the company is unstable and no one will want to work for them. Basically trashing them in the industry. This must be a chapter I missed in “how to win friends and influence people”.

Now I will tell you that it wasn’t all bad. She was right about building your network. That is absolutely important. You don’t have to do it by taking candidates out to lunch or dinner and include their whole family. You don’t it by making phone calls and presenting prospective candidates with great career opportunities or presenting top level candidates to prospective clients.

In closing if a new recruiter listens to the first 3 episodes and does what she says you WILL make placements but you won’t be a trusted consultant to your industry. You’ll be what so many companies and professionals think about recruiters. “Just in it for the money”. This information creates recruiters that give out industry a bad reputation. I still have a bunch more episodes to listen too and maybe she gets bet but I’m not holding out hope.
