Dggng The Crts: Episode 1 – Dave Kelly in an Xtra Large, Mad House

A nomadic look through the story of music as I have come to commune with it through time. Stories told from a point in the nexus of life outside of and inside of the world of music as I have come to know it. Episode 1 starts from a place that is both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Dave ‘Rude Boy’ Kelly shaped my worldview of Dancehall music in the late 1990s. What I didn’t really know until now is the case that he has made in my life story for not just being my favorite producer, but possibly the greatest producer of dancehall music in my lifetime.

From his beginnings working with Donovan Germain in the late 80s to start Penthouse Productions as a critical centerpiece of the operation to starting his own label Madhouse Records in 1993, Dave Kelly’s work was far above the rest. From Madhouse Records we were privileged to have borne witness to Dave’s multitalented hands as he took the reins as a songwriter, musician, producer, and engineer and gave us hit after hit, and classic after classic.

Madhouse became a home of sorts for many an artist from Terror Fabulous to Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Baby Cham, Spragga Benz, Wayne Wonder, Lady Saw, Mr. Easy, Shaggy and Frisco Kid and the unknown, never seen Alias/Stranger who was thought to be the voice of Dave Kelly himself.

Episode 1 brings you Dave Kelly in an Xtra Large, Mad House. A deep dive into Dancehall from the hands of Dave ‘Rude Boy’ Kelly, in his 1990s Madhouse and Xtra Large label days.
