Memory Problems Are Not Just About Aging

You can be in your 30s or 40s and still feel like your memory is slipping. Memory is not just an aging issue. Many people in their 60s and 70s worry when they start forgetting words, losing track of why they walked into a room, or struggling to recall details from a conversation. But I'm also seeing this in people in their 30s and 40s. They are running businesses, managing families, working demanding jobs, and trying to keep up with endless information. Then they start noticing that their memory feels worse than it should. In this episode, I explain memory in a simple way. For memory to work, your brain has to form the memory, consolidate it, and recall it later. If stress, poor sleep, blood sugar spikes, inflammation, or constant distraction interfere with any step, your memory can suffer. This does not mean you have dementia. It may mean your brain is overloaded. We'll talk about why stress makes it harder to store memories, why sleep is essential for memory consolidation, why metabolic health affects brain function, and why being mentally present matters more than most people realize. The goal is not to panic about every forgotten word. The goal is to understand what your brain needs so your memory can work the way it should. -------------------------- Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://www.healthyaging.drashori.com/ebook/ Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Curious how well you're aging? 7 Habits That Help Women Handle Hormone Changes

Perimenopause can start years before menopause, but many women are told there's nothing wrong. Fatigue, poor sleep, mood changes, weight shifts, and brain fog are often treated like separate problems.  Hormone changes do not start overnight. For many women, the transition can begin years before menopause. You may notice sleep changes, mood swings, weight shifts, hair thinning, more hunger, brain fog, or a different stress response long before anyone calls it perimenopause. In this episode, I walk through 7 habits that can make this transition easier. We talk about why muscle matters for metabolism, why sleep needs more structure, why nutrient-rich food becomes more important, and why fiber, daily movement, stress recovery, and body awareness matter more than simply being told your labs are "normal." The goal is not to turn perimenopause into a disease. The goal is to help you feel more in control of your body during a normal but sometimes difficult transition. If you are in your 30s or 40s and feel like your body is changing, this episode will help you know what to pay attention to and where to start. -------------------------- Download my free 6 Healthy-Aging Habits ebook: https://www.healthyaging.drashori.com/ Book a health coaching session: https://drashori.com/health-coaching/  Subscribe to my free Healthy Aging newsletter: https://newsletter.drashori.com/  Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DrAshoriMD Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrAshoriMD  Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrAshoriMD --------------------------- Not ready to book any sessions?  Get your healthy aging score or find out your healthy aging type by taking these fun, free quizes on my website.  Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Doctor Turned Health Coach by Mohammad Ashori MD. I Was Sick For 15 Years

I was a doctor, and I still couldn't fix my own health. Today I'm sharing something I haven't talked about before. My own health journey. For nearly 15 years, through college, medical school, and residency, I dealt with symptoms that I couldn't explain. High blood pressure. High cholesterol. Gut issues. Brain fog. Poor sleep. Low energy. I did what most people do. I saw doctors. I took medications. I tried to manage each symptom on its own. But I still felt terrible. At some point, I realized this wasn't working. So I stepped back and started asking a different question. What does my body actually need? That's when things started to change. Better sleep. Better food. More consistent movement. Less intensity. Less noise and stress. Over time, everything improved. Today, at 47, I feel better than I did during some of the most important years of my life. The Floor vs Ceiling Mistake When it Comes to Fitness

One hard workout means nothing without consistency. Today I'm talking about one of the biggest mistakes people make with exercise. They focus too much on intensity. Most people think they need to push harder, train longer, and exhaust themselves to get results. But that's not how your body actually adapts. In this episode, I break down the difference between your "ceiling" and your "floor." Your ceiling is your best performance. Your floor is what you can do consistently, even on your worst day. And the truth is, your body adapts to consistency, not one hard workout. I also talk about why chasing intensity leads to burnout, missed workouts, and lack of progress. And how building a strong "floor" allows you to actually improve your performance over time. Why Your Doctor Is No Longer Enough

Most people expect their doctor to do something they simply can't. Today I'm talking about the difference between primary care and health coaching. Because a lot of people don't fully understand what each one is designed to do. Primary care is essential. It helps you screen for disease, diagnose problems, and manage medical conditions. But the reality is, most primary care doctors don't have the time to go deep into your day to day habits. They can guide you. They can prescribe. They can recommend. But they can't walk with you through the implementation. And that's where health coaching comes in. In this episode, I break down how these two roles are different. I talk about why they can't replace each other. And how combining both can give you a much more complete approach to your health. The Minimum Dose For Better Health - Why You Might Be Doing Too Much

The best health plan is the one you barely notice. Today I'm talking about the minimum effective dose for your health. And why doing less is often the better strategy. Most people assume they need a lot of time, effort, and intensity to see health results. But what I've seen over and over again in my patients and coaching clients is the opposite. The more people overcommit, the more likely they are to burn out and stop. In this episode, I break down why starting small is the real path to long term success. I talk about how consistency beats intensity. And why the healthiest people are not the ones doing everything perfectly, but the ones who do the basics consistently over time. I also walk through practical ways to build a baseline routine, create a "busy day" version of your habits, and track what actually matters. Motivation Comes After Action

If you're waiting to feel motivated before you start, you're doing it backwards. Today I'm talking about motivation. And why most people misunderstand it. A lot of people think motivation is something you need before you start. Motivation is actually a result. It's something that shows up after you've been consistent with your habits and start seeing results. In this episode, I break down where motivation really comes from and how to build it in a way that actually lasts. We also talk about why excitement is often mistaken for motivation, and why that leads people to fall off. And I walk through how I help my health coaching clients stay consistent, even when they feel bored, stressed, or unmotivated. How To Safely Get Off PPIs - Weaning off of Proton Pump Inhibitors

This is one of the most common medications people get stuck on. Today I'm talking about proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, the most commonly used medications for acid reflux. They work very well. That's part of the problem. Because once you've been on them for a couple of weeks, it becomes very difficult to come off. In this episode, I walk through why that happens and how to safely taper off. I also explain what to expect during the process, because there will be some rebound symptoms. We also talk about practical ways to manage symptoms during that transition. Things like using short-term alternatives, adjusting how and when you eat, and making realistic changes that you can actually stick to. Because most of the standard advice out there is not sustainable. The goal here is not just to stop a medication. The goal is to feel better without needing it long term.
