It’s a SPECIAL EDITION of The Missing Episodes Podcast.
Since private collector Terry Burnett returned two episodes in 2011 and the announcement in 2013 of nine episodes found in Nigeria, to date, no further missing episodes have been returned, despite the fact that episodes are known to exist in private hands. So, as they’re the most viable option for further Doctor Who missing episode returns in the future, it’s time to talk film collectors.
TV producer and missing episodes expert Paul Vanezis, along with well-connected and established film collectors John Clancy and John Franklin join Tim for a frank and colourful discussion on the hobby of film collecting and the film collecting community.
What is film collecting? Why do people collect film? Is there much interest in TV on film and how much of it is about? How did material make its way from copyright holders into collections? What is the size and state of film collecting today as a hobby? What are attitudes like about secrecy? Are film collectors deliberately hoarding missing episodes? The truth is probably more complicated than you think…
We learn that many collections are tragically ending up in landfill on a regular basis, so what can be done about that? One solution, being worked on by the panel, is to hold a film collectors’ event and we get to learn all about October’s “Film is Fabulous” and what that might reveal…
With enormous thanks John and John for taking the time to talk to a Doctor Who fan and indeed to Paul for making this happen.

It’s episode 14 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The first story of season 4 sees the Lloyd/Davis soft reboot continue, with a trip to 19th Century Cornwall.
Brian Hayles returns to write the first truly generic historical, which see groovy new companions Ben and Polly embark on their first adventure in time and space.
What more do you need in a 19th Century historical romp than pirates vs smugglers vs revenue men?
Tim is joined by colouriser Rich Tipple https://www.itsfarfrombeingallover.co... and researcher Rhys Williams (Doctor Who Magazine) who are all more accepting of the concept of time travel than Ben.
Together they tackle the questions of why The Smugglers tends to slip from fans’ minds, what The Smugglers might have looked like and how successful (or otherwise) it was. Then it’s off on the usual world tour, as we look at where The Smugglers sold, what the Aussie and New Zealand censors thought and what the chances are of ever seeing some more of it are.
So grab a Smallbeer from the fridge, lay down on a comfortable Gurney, and join us as we crack Deadman’s secret key and take a long, hard look at The Smugglers!

It’s episode 13 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! For the first time proper, the TARDIS is back on contemporary Earth, indeed in contemporary London, and The Doctor and Dod… uhh… the Doctor and new, groovy companions Ben and Polly face down the mechanical menace in the Post Office Tower and The War Machines.
Master podcaster Steven Schapansky (@RadioFreeSkaro) and Doctor Who Historian Jon Preddle (https://broadwcast.org/) join to help analyse this most seminal of stories, as Season 3 draws to a close and Doctor Who marches on in a new format under Innes Lloyd and Gerry Davis.
Then it’s off on a world tour, as Jon talks us through the sales process, censorship in Australia and New Zealand and how and why four prints of The War Machines ended up in Nigeria, to be found by Ian Levine in the 1980’s. This is the deepest of deep dives and summarises years of Jon’s cutting-edge research. We also explore why, perhaps, The Wheel in Space wasn’t in Jos when Enemy and Web were recovered over ten years ago!
So leave your Dodo at home, put on your fab gear and join us as we take a look at The War Machines.

It’s episode 12 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The Savages is not only missing from the archives, but also seemingly missing from fandom’s thoughts and affections. What makes it so intangible? What is it about and what did it look like? To explore these questions, Tim is joined once again by Gav Rymill (Dalek 63.88, Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who: The Collection) and Rhys Williams (Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who researcher.)
Ian Stuart-Black’s Doctor Who debut, brings with it a host of firsts as the show begins to reshape itself into the format that would sustain it until, well, now; from the first use of a quarry, to the first proper performance of someone else portraying the Doctor. We also say goodbye to Season 3 stalwart Steven Taylor and Dodo continues to enjoy her character’s resurgence, which began in The Gunfighters. So, thanks to the insights of Gav and Rhys, we find that there’s much to enjoy in this forgotten, cautionary tale of exploitation gone awry. There’s also an in-depth analysis of fur swimwear.
So prime your reacting vibrators, prepare to donate your ‘brain juice’ and join us as we explore the world of The Savages.

It’s episode 11 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! It’s time to explore the realm of The Celestial Toymaker and to commemorate the only missing episode found on Australian soil, Paul and Tim are joined by two prominent Antipodean missing episode devotees: Josh Snares (Youtuber extraordinaire https://www.youtube.com/c/JoshSnares ) and colourist and Celestial Toymaker obsessive, Kieran Highman https://twitter.com/The66Ramblers
We say finally say farewell to the Wiles/Tosh era as once again the team try to get to the bottom of another complex Season 3 origins narrative. Then it’s on to the story itself as we explore the themes, characters and plot involved in this divisive tale that fan lore tells us is an undisputed classic.
Episode 4 was found in Australia in the 1980’s, but why was it there and what are the chances of any more of it being found?
So come and play some seemingly harmless games with us as we take a deep dive into The Celestial Toymaker.

It’s episode 10 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! Paul is back and after some skullduggery in a Parisian tavern, Steven Schapansky (host of the podcast phenomenon that is https://radiofreeskaro.com/) joins the team for a look at Season 3’s and indeed Doctor Who’s most missing serial: The Massacre (of St Bartholemew’s Eve). Together, they try and unpick the genesis of the story. Was John Lucarotti the main force behind it, or is that just a load of old Tosh? Does Lucarotti’s Target novelisation offer some clues? Does the doppelganger plot thread work? And of course we discuss the usual missing episodes aspects – will we ever get to see it?
So put aside your religious differences, and join us in Medieval France for a deep dive into The Massacre.

Finding a way to make sense of it all

This is by far a brilliant podcast that brings together the sadness of junking done by the BBC back in the 70s. The incredible detective work done by so many to track down missing episodes. The heroic efforts of private collectors saving many episodes from annihilation, even is they were oblivious of what they were doing. Paul and Tim are both amusing and insightful in bringing to light why episodes are missing to so many loyal Doctor Who fans. With both logic and humor, they lay out to every listener the best explanation of how so many gems (and a few dog episodes) may well be forever lost in time. For every fan of this iconic classic series. Listen and enjoy.

Entertaining and elucidating

I’ve really enjoyed this and learned a lot about film collectors, restorers, and the bureaucratic archaeology of tracking down the missing episodes of Dr. Who. But what I want to know is when we’re going to get missing episodes of the Missing Episodes podcast?

Radio Free East Tennessee ,

Fascinating!

I was prompted to listen to the September 15, 2023 podcast about film collectors. Learned at lot of things. I feel better about any missing Doctor Who episodes that might be in the hands of film collectors. Sounds like the biggest problem in the film collecting world is what happens to their collections as the collector ages and eventually dies. The guests on the podcast have a plan and are trying to do something better. Great listen.
