287 - How Your Environment Impacts Your Ability to Take Care of You

You start Monday with a plan. Eat the vegetables, take the walk, get to bed at a decent hour. And by Thursday it's come apart, and you're standing in your kitchen at night wondering what is wrong with you that you can't just do the thing you already know how to do. If you've been quietly deciding that you're the problem, this episode is going to hand you a very different place to look. Elizabeth opens with a client who couldn't manage to drink water all day, until she changed one small thing about her setup and the problem disappeared without her trying any harder. From there, she gets into a story about an entire city that dropped its smoking rate sharply without making a single person quit. The thread running through both is the one almost no health advice will tell you: your surroundings are shaping what you do all day long, whether you're paying attention to them or not. Then she walks through the places this actually shows up in your life. The food within arm's reach and the clutter and noise you've stopped noticing. The partner who comes home with pizza the night you planned to cook, the friend you only ever see over a bottle of wine, the mother you love best over a big plate of food. The schedule that runs you into the ground for everybody but you. This is the layer women are least likely to examine, because we've been taught that our health is a personal responsibility, so when it slips, we point the finger inward. The honest part, and the reason this episode matters, is that you can't really see your own environment from the inside. It's too familiar. The very things making this hard are the ones you'll walk right past. This episode helps you start seeing them, and points you toward the quickest way to find out which one is costing you the most right now. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why an entire city's smoking rate dropped sharply without anyone being told to quit, and what that has to do with your water and your walkThe three layers of your environment quietly deciding how hard your healthy habits feel, and which one women almost never look atWhy changing your social environment can feel like abandoning the people you love, and what to do with that fear instead of ignoring itThe reason what's in your fridge might be telling you a much older story than you thinkWhy you genuinely can't assess your own environment from the inside, and what actually helps you see it clearlyThe Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years believing you're the reason your health keeps sliding, this episode offers something closer to relief than another plan. You are not missing some amount of grit that everyone else was handed. You've been trying to run your health inside a life that was quietly working against you, and no one ever told you that the setup was fair game to question. When you stop treating your follow-through as a character flaw and start treating it as a set of conditions you can actually see and change, the whole thing gets lighter. You get to keep the people you love and still take care of yourself. You get to change your surroundings instead of waging war on yourself every single day. And once you can see clearly which piece of your environment is costing you the most, you finally have somewhere useful to start. 286: How Running on Empty Wrecks Your Ability to Stick to Your Health

You finish the busy stretch. The launch, the deadline, the holidays, the season where everyone needed something from you. You held it all together. And then, the second you finally stop, you get sick. Or your back goes out reaching for a sock. If that pattern sounds familiar, this episode explains what your body has been doing to you for years, and why it keeps happening the moment you slow down. Here's the part almost no one connects: the reason you can't follow through on the healthy stuff you already know how to do might have nothing to do with willpower. You're running on empty. And a body running that low on reserves can't hold a good choice in place at six o'clock when you're wiped out. In this episode I walk you through the real cost of never actually stopping, using a client I call Chris whose evening probably looks a lot like yours. We get into why you don't rest even though you know you should, the family rule that taught you to earn it, and the quieter belief running underneath that says the need for rest applies to everyone except you. I talk about how you multitask your own downtime until it stops counting, and why sleep is the first thing you cut even though your body doesn't work on credit. By the end, you'll see the pattern clearly. And you'll understand why seeing it and changing it are two different things, which is exactly where most smart women get stuck. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why you get sick or hurt the moment a busy stretch ends, and what your body was doing the whole timeThe real reason knowing what to do hasn't turned into doing it, and why "try harder" was never going to workThe childhood rule about rest you're still living by, and the belief underneath it you've probably never said out loudWhy you can't bank sleep on the weekend, and where the bill for skipping it actually shows upRESOURCES Take the quiz: Why Do Your Healthy Habits Keep Falling Apart? → elizabethsherman.com/quiz8 Habits guide → elizabethsherman.com/habits265 - "Just Do It" and Why We Don't 260 - 8 Habits & Why They Don't Stick 257 - The Truth About Step Goals, Belly Fat, and Burnout Hey! 285: How Being the Capable One Is Costing You Your Health

You said you'd make dinner. Then you got home, opened the freezer, saw the chicken still frozen solid, and thought: I cannot do this. So you grabbed the rotisserie chicken from the deli case, put it on plates, and sat there feeling like a fraud for not cooking it yourself. Sound familiar? If you're a capable woman who runs a department, a household, or both, and can handle almost anything, except being reliable with your own health, this episode is going to hit close to home. You've probably decided you're lazy, or that you haven't found the right plan yet, or that something is wrong with you specifically. None of that is true, and this episode explains what's actually happening. Here's the sentence at the center of it: "I just need one more hour in the day." You've said it in the car, to your sister, to yourself at 11pm. Elizabeth makes the case that it's a lie, not one you're telling on purpose, but one you need to be true because the real answer is harder. She walks through exactly where that hour would go if someone handed it to you tomorrow, and why your health keeps getting cut while everything else on your list survives. This is the episode for the woman who is loved, needed, and running on empty, and who's starting to suspect that her follow-through problem was never about time or discipline at all. It won't hand you a system to fix it in five easy steps. It will show you the pattern so clearly you won't be able to unsee it. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why your health is the first thing to get cut from your day, and what it has in common with every other thing you drop when you're overloadedThe hidden second half of "I just need one more hour" that you never say out loud, and what it reveals about where your time actually goesWhy saying no fills you with guilt and requires a "good enough" excuse, when the men around you can decline without explaining themselves at allThe Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years quietly ashamed that you can hold together a career, a household, and everyone else's needs but can't stay consistent with a walk or a real dinner, this episode will lift an enormous weight off you. You are not lazy and you are not broken. You are full. And the relief of finally understanding that is real. You get one body and one life, and nobody is coming to hand back the hours you've been giving away. That's a hard thing to hear, and this episode says it with love, not a lecture. You'll walk away seeing your own pattern with a clarity you've never had, and understanding that recognizing it is the first honest step toward actually changing it. 284: How Ignoring Your Body Signals Impacts Your Health After 40

Years ago, Elizabeth stood in a kitchen at a party complaining about brownies, and a woman she barely knew looked over and said, "I guess I just listen to my body," and walked out. Elizabeth thought she was insufferable. She also had no idea what the woman was talking about. She'd been in the fitness world for years. She knew macros and training programs and the protein content of just about anything. And she could not have told you the first thing about what her body was actually saying to her. If you know exactly what you should be doing for your health and still can't get yourself to do it, this episode is going to feel familiar. Because the reason usually isn't a lack of information, and it isn't about trying harder. Somewhere along the way you learned to override what your body tells you, and you got so good at it that you don't even hear it anymore. In this episode, Elizabeth walks through what that override looks like in a real day. Wanting pasta, eating the chicken and salad the plan allows, then standing over the counter eating almonds out of the bag and never feeling satisfied. Resisting the cookies all week and then eating seven of them on a Thursday night. Sitting exhausted on the couch at 8pm and deciding it's "too early" for bed. Biting your tongue for weeks and then coming unglued over a glass left on the counter. Every one of those is your body asking for something, and every one of those is a moment you talked yourself out of hearing it. And here's the part that makes midlife women feel like they're losing it: this used to work. At 30, you could ignore your body and recover fine. Now one bad night of sleep costs you three days, and the strategy you built decades ago has quietly stopped working. Elizabeth explains why that happens in perimenopause and menopause, and what it means for whether you can actually follow through on the things you already know how to do. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why "listen to your body" has probably never meant anything real to you, and what the phrase is actually pointing atThe everyday moments you override your body without noticing, across food, movement, sleep, and unspoken stressWhy pushing through worked at 30 and quietly stopped working in your mid-40sWhat your cravings, 3am wake-ups, and afternoon crashes have been trying to tell you the whole timeThe Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've been calling yourself lazy or broken because you know what to do and still don't do it, this episode hands you a more accurate explanation. Your body has been talking to you the whole time. The brain fog, the cravings, the exhaustion, the mood that turns on a dime, none of it means something is wrong with you. Your body is communicating, and you were trained to tune it out, and in midlife that costs you more than it used to. The relief here is that this is learnable. Elizabeth didn't know how to hear her body either, and she does now, and that changed whether she could actually stick with the things she already knew. You are not a different kind of person than the women who seem to do this easily. You just haven't been taught the one thing that makes following through stop feeling like a fight with yourself. 283: How Old Diet Rules Sabotage Your Health Today

You know what to do. You could probably teach it. You know to eat more vegetables, get to bed earlier, and move your body most days. And you still end up standing in your kitchen at nine o'clock at night, arguing with yourself about whether you're allowed to have the chocolate. If that scene feels a little too familiar, this episode is for you. Here's the part nobody tells you. The reason you can't do the thing you already know how to do has nothing to do with how much willpower or discipline you have. It's that you're carrying a long list of food rules you never actually chose. Somebody handed them to you when you were young, before you had any way to question them, and they've been running quietly in the background ever since. In this first episode of the pillar series, Elizabeth walks through where that second voice in the kitchen came from, why decades of dieting taught you to treat your own hunger as the enemy, and why knowing everything about nutrition has never once been enough to change what you do at night. She makes a claim that gets a little bit of pushback: if you're eating for any reason other than hunger, that's emotional eating, and there is nothing wrong with it. She also names the way exercise quietly turned into the thing you do to pay off what you ate. This one leaves you seeing your own pattern clearly, maybe for the first time. Because once you understand whose voice is doing the arguing at nine o'clock, the whole thing looks different. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM MIDLIFE WOMEN FACE HERE The biggest reason midlife women can't follow through on their health has nothing to do with missing information or a shortage of willpower. It's that decades of diet history installed a set of food rules, absorbed young from a mother, a sister, a boyfriend, or a magazine, that taught them their own body could not be trusted. Hunger got labeled a problem. Cravings got labeled a weakness. Wanting a specific food got treated as proof that something was broken in them. So every food decision turns into an argument between a rule and a body signal, and the woman has already been taught to side against her own body. That is why she can know exactly what to do and still not do it. The information was never the missing piece. The unexamined rules are what's running the show. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why a woman who actually trusted her own body wouldn't be standing in the kitchen arguing with herself in the first placeWhere your food rules really came from, and why so many of them contradict each other yet still feel mandatoryThe reason knowing everything about nutrition never turns into doing it, and why more information won't fix itHow exercise quietly became a debt you pay off after eating, and what that does to your sleep, your cravings, and your moodRESOURCES Take the quiz: Why Do Your Healthy Habits Keep Falling Apart? In about three minutes it shows you your specific pattern, the real reason your follow-through keeps breaking down, and what to look at first. 282: Why You Resent Your Health Routine Even When You're Showing Up

You're showing up. You're doing the workouts, sending the emails, reaching out to friends, eating the way you're supposed to eat. And yet something feels off. The results aren't coming. The friendships aren't deepening. The business isn't growing. And underneath all of it is a quiet, low-grade resentment you can't quite name. This episode is about what's actually driving that feeling. Not a lack of effort. Not bad luck. A belief most of us have been carrying since childhood that doing the right things automatically earns us what we want. And the way that belief quietly runs your health, your relationships, and your life without you realizing it. Elizabeth shares a personal story from a recent night in Mexico that stopped her cold: catching herself judging her husband, then recognizing the exact same pattern in herself. What followed was an honest look at where this expectation comes from, what it costs midlife women specifically, and what it actually takes to start getting the results you want. This one will make you uncomfortable in the best possible way. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why doing everything "right" can still leave you stuck, and what's actually missingWhere the belief that effort automatically earns results comes from, and why midlife is when it stops workingWhat self-pity actually looks like from the inside (hint: it doesn't feel like self-pity at all)The real reason women in midlife struggle to build friendships, grow their businesses, and make their health habits stickWhy seeing a pattern in yourself is not the same as being able to move through it aloneThe Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've been doing the things and still not getting the results, this episode will give you a completely different explanation for why. Not a discipline problem. Not a willpower problem. A conditioned belief that was installed in you long before you had any say in it, and that has been quietly running in the background ever since. Understanding that is the first step toward something actually changing. Most women who listen to this episode will recognize themselves in it immediately. The waiting. The quiet resentment. The sense that something is unfair but you can't quite put your finger on what. This episode names that clearly and honestly, and points you toward the one shift that makes everything else possible: recognizing that the life you want is not going to arrive on its own. You are the one who has to build it. And that is not a punishment. It's just how it works. 281: Leaking, Pressure, and Hip Pain: It's Not Just Aging

Leaking, pressure, and hip pain: it's not just aging. If you've been quietly living with any of those symptoms and assuming it's just what happens to women's bodies over time, this episode is going to change that story. Dr. Mary Alice Vetter is a doctor of physical therapy who specializes in pelvic floor care, and what she sees in her practice every day is women who were told their symptoms were normal, not treatable. She calls them "the usuals." Her patients get sent home with a diagnosis, a shrug, and the expectation that they'll just manage around it. Most of them have been doing that for years. This conversation covers the full picture of pelvic floor health in midlife, including what prolapse actually is, who it affects, what the symptoms are, and why so many of those symptoms get misread as hip problems, back problems, or just aging. It also covers the connection between estrogen, menopause, and pelvic floor dysfunction, which is something most women have never been told. And if you've ever been told to do your Kegels and wondered why they're not helping, or suspected they might actually be making things worse, Mary Alice addresses that directly. The answer is probably not what you were expecting. She works virtually, so geography is not a barrier. You'll find her information in the show notes below. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN What pelvic floor dysfunction actually looks like in midlife women, including the symptoms that have nothing to do with leaking that most women are completely missingWhy prolapse is far more common than women think, what the different types are, and what your options are beyond just "waiting to see if surgery is necessary"Why Kegels might not be the answer, and what Mary Alice actually prescribes first to every single patient regardless of what's going onThe Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most women over 40 who are dealing with pelvic floor issues have been told some version of "this is just what happens." They leave their doctor's appointments without a real explanation, without a path forward, and often with a low-level shame about something they didn't cause and don't know how to fix. This episode removes the information gap and replaces it with something more useful: a clearer picture of what's actually happening in the body, what the options are, and the knowledge that what feels embarrassing to talk about is actually incredibly common and very treatable. If any part of your body has been talking to you in ways you've been ignoring, this episode gives you the language, the framework, and the permission to stop waiting. 280: Why "Having to Go" Isn't Just About Water (part 2 of Chris's Story)

Chris noticed the bathroom trips increasing first. More frequency, more urgency, and a ready explanation sitting right there: she'd started drinking a lot more water. Made sense. Case closed, as far as she was concerned. Except it kept going. Her body started feeling different as she lost weight, so that got filed under weight loss too. Then constipation showed up, and she was eating more vegetables than she ever had. None of it added up on its own, and none of it seemed serious enough to mention to anyone. She's a nurse. She goes to her appointments. She was paying closer attention to her body than she ever had in her life, and she still spent years explaining away symptoms that had a name she didn't know to ask for. That name is pelvic organ prolapse. Chris talks through what it actually felt like: the frequency, the pressure when sitting, the moment a doctor said the word and she immediately pictured women decades older than herself. She talks about trying a pessary ring and hating it, about deciding to have surgery, and about the shame that kept her from telling anyone outside her husband and her coach. She also shares something her own doctor told her that reframed the whole thing: losing fat means losing estrogen, and estrogen is part of what supports the pelvic floor. Weight loss, perimenopause, and pelvic floor strength were all happening in her body at once, and no one had ever connected those dots for her before. What You'll Learn: Why urinary urgency and frequency during weight loss or perimenopause can point to something other than hydration or hormones aloneHow fat loss affects estrogen levels, and why that matters for pelvic floor supportWhat the three stages of prolapse progression can look like day to day, including symptoms that don't involve painWhy so many women, including women in medicine, never get asked about their pelvic floor at a routine examWhat You Can Do Right Now: At your next appointment, ask directly: is there any sign of pelvic organ prolapse, and how is my pelvic floor doing? Don't wait for the question to come to you. If the answer feels rushed or dismissive, that's information too, and it may be worth finding a provider who will actually engage with it. Caught early, at stage one or stage two, prolapse can often be improved with the right pelvic floor therapy. Chris's case had already progressed past that point by the time it was named. The Listener Takeaway: Chris knew her body better than most people do. She still needed someone else to name what was happening before she could act on it. If something in your body has felt off in a way you've been quietly explaining away, that's worth a direct conversation with your doctor, not another few months of your own theories.
