Season 2: Episode 4 – Athlete
It’s Sports week! Our two directors square off with movies that revolve around sports and athletes. Both directors enlist the help of their best collaborators as Martin Scorsese taps Robert De Niro to play the real life boxer Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull” and Spike Lee calls upon his multi-collaborator Denzel Washington to play the fictional Jake Shuttlesworth in “He Got Game”.
Both movies involve great performances to go along with a couple of very good films. But which will come out on top this week? Will De Niro’s Oscar winning portrayal give him the edge? Or will Denzel’s tortured father help pull “He Got Game” to the front?
Nate, Steve, and Jeff discuss and determine who comes out on top. Listen and find out their thoughts and who will win!

Season 2: Episode 3 – Paranoia Week
It’s paranoia week on Duel of the Greats! But Paranoia of what? Of whom? Are they watching? Are they listening? Are they on the podcast right now? They are, in fact, Spike Lee’s “Summer of Sam” and Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver”. Two movies that take place in New York and make everyone a suspect.
Steve, Nate, and Jeff dive into these films and look at which one was the better depiction of paranoid. Which film showed the characters being sucked into their own worlds of paranoia better?
New York is a character of it’s own this week as it dominates both movies. But which one does it better? The hosts take a look and crown a victor. Listen and find out which one takes it home!

Season 2: Episode 2 – Best of the Best
Season 2 rolls on!
After reviewing the first movies of Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese we now move on to their best! While the consensus may not be universal, it is generally accepted that Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” and Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” are these directors best films. Others may have made more money or had more awards nominations but these are the two that have stood the test of time.
Jeff, Nate, and Steve dive in to get it the bottom of which movie is better. Which one deserves the title of “best of the best”. Scorsese’s gangster opus, or Lee’s deep look into the societal issues that surround a small neighborhood in Brooklyn.
Both films are great. Both deserve all the accolades that they receive. But only a true duel can get to the bottom of which is best. Listen and find out who the guys think should take the crown this week!

Season 2: Episode 1 – Opening Credits!
We’re back, baby! Season two has begun!
After the epic battle that was Steven Spielberg vs. Ridley Scott last season, we come back this year with two new directors who are legends in their own right, Spike Lee vs. Martin Scorsese. These two directors have an incredibly long and varied filmography and we’ve got some great films to review and compare throughout this season so be sure to join us to see them all.
Up first this week is the opening films from these directors. Spike Lee has “She’s Gotta Have It” and “School Daze”, two movies that are part of his “thematic trilogy” that is completed with “Do the Right Thing” (talked about in a separate week). Scorsese has a thematic trilogy of his own. The first of which was never filmed, but the final two parts were filmed in “Who’s That Knocking At My Door?” and “Mean Streets”
Which director started their career better? Which movies jumped out the most? Who seemed the most promising? Steve, Nate, and Jeff tackle these topics and more in the kickoff to a new Duel this season.

Season 1: Episode 15 – Closing Arguments
It’s We Rest Our Case week!
The Final Battle has arrived! It’s a bit of a different format this week as Steve will take a movie directed by Ridley Scott and plead his case for why it shows why Ridley should be the victor in season one. Going up against him is Jeff picking a movie from Steven Spielberg that showcases why Spielberg should be standing alone at the end of this season.
Steve’s pick for Ridley Scott is Kingdom of Heaven – Director’s Cut (2005) and Jeff’s pick for Spielberg is War of the Worlds (2005). Why does each movie represent the best of each director? What is so great about these two movies? And which one shows why their director should be named the winner of S1 DUEL OF THE GREATS? All those questions and more were discussed in this week’s penultimate episode of season one.
