The MoH You Know

The MoH You Know is an ongoing conversation with the Claremore Museum of History board members, staff and residents as we strive to preserve the rich history of our local community - one story at a time! Claremore is blessed with many historical figures that achieved much fame and success but there is also a vast array of heritage family members who have been part of our community since before statehood. Celebrating history, connecting community and inspiring creativity are three key components of our mission. Our desire is that these pillars of our mission will weave their way into the conversations and discussions that we will have on the podcasts.

    E28:The Lady with the Big Machines - Joanne Green

    Joanne and Ira Green started the Ira M. Green Construction company in 1969. They both loved construction and worked hard together – they were a team! They raised 3 children of their own Brian, Brent and Julie. Ira’s daughter Vanessa also came to live with them in 1975. Ira passed away in 1996 and Joanne has continued to run the company and operate as CEO since then. Joanne was born in 1950 in Claremore at the old Franklin Hospital to Junus and Gussie Bentley. She was the last and only first grade student at Owalla School before it was consolidated. Joanne started work at the age of 15 in Claremore at Roy’s café making fifty cents an hour plus tips. She became an ordained minister for the Little Rock Church several years ago and still gives thanks to God for leading her in this journey.

    E27: Claremore's Favorite Centenarian - Jesse Lingenfelter

    During her 107 years, Jesse Lingenfelter saw many changes come and go in her family’s home town of Claremore and was always eager to share her memories. Born December 11, 1914 in Perkins, Oklahoma to Robert and Ethel (Hedrick) Webb, She graduated from Pryor with the class of 1933, and in 1934 Jessie married Ralph Lingenfelter. The couple made their home in Claremore, and together raised their three children. A wonderful wife and mother, Jessie took great care of her family while Ralph operated the Lingenfelter's DX Station at 301 W. Will Rogers Blvd. When Ralph passed in 1971, Jessie worked at the Claremore Hospital, then Lowrance Electronics, and finally serving as the greeter at the J.M. Davis Gun Museum. Jessie was very determined to stay independent throughout her life, and she contributed this to her never smoking or drinking, and making sure she was at church every Sunday. Jessie didn't like giving her age until she was well into her 90’s and she never left home not looking her very best.

    E26: A Fireside Chat with Tad Jones

    Welcome to Episode 26 of the MoH You Know Podcast series. This week, we sit down with Tad Jones. Tad was raised in Claremore, Oklahoma and graduated from Oologah High School. After high school, he attended the University of Mississippi to play football and he majored in accounting. He transferred to the University of Tulsa where he earned a scholarship as quarterback for the football team. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from TU in 1996. Tad was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1998 and served for 12 years. He served as the House Majority Floor leader his last two years in office. In 2014 he became the 6th Executive Director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum and is currently working on a multi-million renovation and rebranding of the Museum. Tad is currently serving on the NE Tech Foundation Board, the RSU TV Advisory Board, Will Rogers Medallion Awards Board and the Grand Mental Health Board. Tad is a Rotarian and served as President in 2022-23. He and is married to Sammi Jones, they have four boys and live in Claremore.

    E25: Reflections with Alice Farbro

    Welcome to Episode 25 of our “The MoH You Know” Podcast Series. This week, our listeners can sit in on a discussion with Alice Farbro. Alice Cline Farbro was born in 1929, the year of the big depression. When the stock market fell, people committed suicide, and many Oklahomans left the state of Oklahoma to try to find work and a way to keep their families on their feet. Alice had a happy childhood growing up on te Cline farm and enjoying all of the simple pleasures that came along with farm life – along with all the hard work. She graduated from Oklahoma A&M and applied with American Airlines to be an airline hostess and also with Stanolind Oil Company. Stanolind hired her and she worked for them as a secretary in the Exploration Department. During her tenure at Stanolind Research Department, she started dating Bill Farbro whom she had graduated from Claremore High School and later married.

    E24: A Chat with Dave Faulkner

    If you are a history buff, you are going to love this "The MoH You Know" episode on many levels. Dave Faulkner was born in the Franklin Hospital in Claremore into a family with a long history of public service. His great-grandfather, Dave M. Faulkner served on the Cherokee Council and Senate and was sent to Congress as a Cherokee delegate. He was the last Assistant Chief of the Cherokees prior to Statehood. His grandfather, Dave J. Faulkner was a Rogers County Commissioner and a Rogers County Sheriff. Dave graduated from Claremore High School in1970, where he played baseball and basketball. He graduated from Oklahoma University in. 1975 and went into the oil and gas business. Later in 1992 he and his wife Mary purchased Rogers County Abstract, which they owned until September of 2020. Dave has served with numerous organizations and boards, including serving 29 years on the board of RCB Bank. He joined Warren Pixley as Co-Chair of the Claremore 2000 Committee, which spearheaded a successful election to change Claremore’s form of City Government, which still stands and was named Claremore’s Citizen of the Year in 1999.

    E23: A Claremore Grad's memory of Pearl Harbor

    A Claremore native, John Cockrum was in his junior year at Claremore High School when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December 1941. Later, as seniors, he and four of his classmates — anticipating they would be drafted — agreed to join the Navy together. For Cockrum, though, there was a snag: Too young at age 17, he needed a parent’s permission to enlist. And his mother wouldn’t give it. Finally, he succeeded in getting his father to sign. He graduated from CHS on a Tuesday night and on Friday he was on his way to San Diego for boot camp. From boot camp, he went on to serve on board the USS Piranah in the Pacific and is one of the few remaining survivors from Pearl Harbor.

    E22: Andy Hogan Perspectives

    Life has changed again for Andy Hogan as he finally is enjoying retirement. An educator after more than 30 years, his interests were long distance running, bow hunting and anything to do with Will Rogers. He still relates personally to the man he touted for years in his duties at the Claremore Will Rogers Memorial where from 2004 until 2022, he was the Museum's historical guide and Will Rogers' interpreter. After retiring from his education career, Hogan also helped open the Claremore Recreation Center in 1999 and worked there until joining the museum staff. He officiated football and basketball more than 40 years until retiring in 2007. He was inducted into the Greater Tulsa Officials Association Hall of Fame. He and his wire, Jan have four children and nine grandchildren.

    E21: Community Servant - John Burrows

    The son of John Henry and Alice Mae (Donnell) Burrows, John Burrows was born April 10, 1928, in Dallas, Texas. John graduated from Claremore High School in 1945, and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. After his discharge he continued his education at Oklahoma State University where he graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business Administration. On June 29, 1952, John married Loretta Jean Hill at the First Baptist Church in Claremore. He was the owner of Burrows & Burrows Insurance Agency in Claremore which he began in 1957 after employment with Amerada and Gulf Oil companies. At one point, three generations were working together at the agency with the addition of John’s son Dave along with granddaughter Kory Burrows Coots. A community leader at heart, John served on the RSU Foundation, was President of the Claremore Chamber of Commerce, the JM Davis Commission and the Rotary Club just to name a few. John passed away on December 13, 2014.
