The first season focuses on community members who are also business owners here in the city to give you a deeper insight into who they are, why they have a passion for food and how they are coping during this time.

On our this episode, I am joined by Tamara Cohen co-owner of Mazál Bagels a NY inspired bagel shop and café that offers fresh hand-made bagels, coffees and pastries.

Find out how she went from making pumpkin pies in her toaster oven at home, launching a full-time online business selling cookies, cakes and bagels to having her own café with her boyfriend Luis here in Madrid giving people a little piece of home in the city and a place where they could find a community.

What we discuss:

Growing up eating bagels every week

Experimenting in her toaster oven at home

Launching an online business selling her baked treats

The art of bagel-making

Opening a brick and mortar shop and cafe in Madrid and what day to day operations look like

How they are coping in the midst of the coronavirus

Her tips on how you can support them and others during this time

Her favourite restaurants in Madrid

About Tamara

Tamara moved to Madrid in September 2015 to work as a language teaching assistant and during her first year, right around Thanksgiving, she made a pumpkin pie from home, in her toaster oven, and then had the idea to sell them to other teaching assistants. Within a year, she had a full-blown website that featured cookies, cakes, and most of all-bagels This was the beginning of Bruja’s Bakery, which was an at-home bakery, started in a toaster oven and eventually moved to a real oven.  Bruja’s Bakery became Tamara’s full-time work and quickly grew to the point that her home kitchen was not enough, so in 2019, after more than a year of research and preparation, Tamara, and her boyfriend, Luis, opened Mazál - the brick & mortar location of Bruja’s Bakery.  Mazál is a NY bagel shop-inspired cafe that offers fresh, hand-made bagels, bagel sandwiches, coffees, & pastries, as well as catering and private events.  Tamara wanted to open a place that made people feel like they could have a little piece of home in Madrid, or where people could find a community, and she says, that’s exactly what Mazál has become.

Order your bagels, cookies and cakes through the Mazál Bagels website www.mazalmadrid.com or by sending a message via Instagram @mazalmadrid and don't forget to like and follow them on Facebook.
