17: My Accidental Entrepreneurial Journey That Turned Shame Into Me Taking My Power Back
When I was working in corporate, I had this belief that a corporate job was secure.
But when I was unexpectedly let go and then rehired on the same day on my eight-year anniversary at the company, it completely shifted my perspective on job security. The way I was “let go” stripped me completely naked of my dignity. I thought I had done everything “right” with mentors, executive sponsors, networking, and more. No one taught me about office politics.
After I got off the phone call with the boss, I just broke down and cried. I felt one word: Shame. If someone could take my financial security away from me so quickly due to ego and office politics, why was I at this company?
That question led me to reflect on the work I was doing, why I was doing it, and what I ultimately wanted to do.
In this episode, I share the key moments that lead me to transition from two decades in corporate America at Fortune 50 companies to embracing entrepreneurship and the three ideas that helped me believe in my ability to take the leap.

An online business sounds promising with flexibility for many. But leading your online business or expanding your brand online can bring up a lot of fear at first.
But when Kari Poppleton was diagnosed with a disability later in life and didn’t have the same physical capabilities she previously had, an online business was an exciting opportunity that gave her hope for having a fulfilling career that could meet her needs.
