The Idol of an Easy Life

The Idol of an Easy Life

Our culture (and our human nature) condition us to expect and desire an easy life. Rather than serving, we want to be served. Rather than sacrifice, we want comfort. In this episode of the Embracing a Simpler Life podcast we will be exposing the idol of an easy life, considering the value of "easy" in eternity, and taking a look at what the Bible has to say about all of these things.

Scriptures Referenced James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trail, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
2 Corinthians 4:17, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
2 Corinthians 12:9, “But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
John 13:12-17, "When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Making Sense of Suffering in Light of Eternity

Making Sense of Suffering in Light of Eternity

We are so excited to be back after an impromptu break from podcasting over the past month or so. The reason? We're expecting another baby! Between "book launch burn out" and first trimester, it was time to rest.
This week on the Embracing a Simpler Life podcast we are tackling an incredibly difficult topic: suffering. In fact, suffering is the thing that stands between many people and faith in God, because they don't understand how a good God could allow it. At the very least, most of us wrestle with this and struggle to understand. We do.
While we don't have all the answers, we have found some handles to help us process suffering through eternal perspective. We have some thoughts and many scriptures we'd like to share with you.
    Join us as we consider:
How does this life measure up to eternity? What are the good fruits that come from suffering? What does it mean to have hope?
Episode Sponsor: Phonics Museum App by Veritas Teaching children to read as early as possible is one of the best things parents and teachers can do for a child’s future academic success, but knowing how or where to start is overwhelming and oftentimes confusing for parents, but it doesn’t have to be…

Scriptures Referenced John 16:20-22, "...A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy."
James 1:2-4, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
1 Corinthians 13:13, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Revelation 21:2-4, “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 'He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
2 Corinthians 4:17-18, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Resources for Children As mentioned in this podcast episode, we've found some great children's Bibles to help our kids connect with God's word from a young age. Here are a few of our favorites.
In order from youngest child to oldest:
Read Aloud Bible Stories for Kids (all volumes), great for ages 2-4
Jesus Storybook Bible, for ages 4-6+
    Children's Easy-to-Read Bible, for ages 5-7+
NIrV Kids' Quest Study Bible, for ages 7+

Resources for Adults The Story: Using excerpted scriptures, this Bible tells the story of God in a chronological, over-view fashion.
One Year Chronological Bible: This Bible is reorganized into what scholars believe to be chronological order and divided into 365 daily readings. This is what Katie is reading this year.

    Scriptures Referenced Isaiah 40:6-8,
    A voice says, “Cry out.”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”

    “All people are like grass,
and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
        Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.”

Matthew 28:18-20, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
    Jeremiah 9:23-24,
This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
        justice and righteousness on earth,
        for in these I delight,”
    declares the Lord.
