Emotional Sobriety: The Next Step in Recovery

Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholic's Anonymous, wrote in 1952, "If we examine every disturbance we have, great or small, we will find at the root some unhealthy dependence and its consequent demand." Wilson suggested that if we could identify and continually surrender these unrealistic and unrecognizable demands, that we may then be able to accomplish what he imagined to be recovery's next frontier - something he called emotional sobriety. Flash forward 70 years, and join psychotherapists and best-selling authors Thom Rutledge and Dr. Allen Berger, who have taken up the mantle of exploring Bill Wilson's new frontier. Welcome to Emotional Sobriety.

I’m listening to your podcast about emotional sobriety, and uncertainty, and you’re going off about Donald Trump and DOGE. I had to turn it off. I am certain that we’ve been headed down a very dark path for 32 out of the last 36 years. The man is doing what we voted him to do. Fair trade, secure border, expose, and end government waste and corruption. If you don’t like it then vote. Don’t use a recovery platform to spread your political views. I’m not gonna sit there and listen to you degrade my beliefs, and politics on a recovery show. Ridiculous!

I discovered this when Celeste Yvonne came on. Now I listen every night. Such good work and helpful thinking around emotional sobriety. Thank you for the gift of creating and sharing something so important and thoughtful. You have helped me a lot as I do my own work.
