Novara FM: London’s Endless Appetite w/ Jonathan Nunn and Amardeep Singh Dhillon
London is a foodie metropolis: undoubtedly one of the best places to eat in the world. But eating in London is also, like everything else in the city, shaped by its history as the capital of a globe-spanning empire. How did the contraction of this formal empire change infamously terrible British cuisine? How did multiculturalism […]

Centuries of colonial capitalism have reordered life on the planet and inside our bodies, from industrial farming and the uneven advances of modern medicine, to night shifts, chronic stress and inflammation. Novara FM: What’s Really Causing the Housing Crisis? w/ Nick Bano
Why is it so expensive to rent in the UK? In a divisive new book, barrister Nick Bano places the blame squarely on price-gouging landlords, rejecting the conventional wisdom that calls for more new housing as a solution to the crisis. For a special edition of Downstream IRL, Ash Sarkar is joined by philosopher, author, and one of the world’s most cited academics, Judith Butler. Downstream: We Are Getting Foreign Policy Very Wrong w/ Steve Coll
With hindsight, the wars waged by the US and Britain in Afghanistan and Iraq look like terrible failures, both strategically and politically: the Taliban are back in power in Afghanistan, and living standards are worse in Iraq than they were before Saddam Hussein. In his new book The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the United States […]

Heads up: Apple may be trying to shadowban your podcast
The most essential podcast, but the latest episodes don’t update in the feed (since March 2024, after the “Israelis want genocide” episode) for both Novara Media and Novara Live podcast. Even as a subscriber I could not access them in your feed (it still shows late March as your latest episode) only by doing a separate search and manually saving them. I worried you guys stopped broadcasting until I checked your Youtube feed.

The Left Side: UK and beyond
Novara entered my consciousness while grieving the death of the late David Graeber (Novara hosted Graeber as a guest). Since then, I’ve continued following Novara’s excellent reporting.
In this time of crisis RE: political representation, “objectivity” most frequently functions to smokescreen “centrist” technocratic manipulations.
For folks on the abysmally represented Left–in the UK and beyond–Novara Media is an oasis of reporting, opinion, and analysis lacking the hostilities of folks who insist “both sides” must be given equal airtime, even when one side is totalitarian, fascist, and global. Hosts Ash Sarkar and Aaron Bastani are personal favorites; sharp, critical, intelligent and engaging. I’m so grateful for their thoughtful stewardship of political, intellectual, cultural and aesthetic values.
Solidarity forever. Long live Novara Media.
