Guest Bio:
Kris Covey is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies and Sciences Program at Skidmore College where he studies terrestrial ecosystems and their role in climate and life. An Applied Ecologist, and a Biogeochemist, Kris works to integrate his research into solutions for managing human dominated landscapes for multiple values. After designing the global study that provided the first robust estimate of number of trees on earth (3.04 trillion), Kris turned his focus to large-scale soil carbon mapping using a novel combination of existing technologies. Prior to joining the faculty at Skidmore College, Dr. Covey was the Lead Scientist at the Ucross High Plains Stewardship Initiative and a Lecturer in Forest Dynamics at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. There, he co-founded the Western Research Fellowship at the Ucross Highplains Stewardship Initiative and the Quick Carbon research program, served as a member of the School's Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Committee, and as a member of Yale University’s Carbon Offset Task Force. As a contributor to the Global Carbon Project's Methane Working Group, Kris authored the vegetation section of the Global Methane Budget. He serves as a member of the Board of Trusties for The Adirondack Nature Conservancy and the New York State Wood Products Development Council.
 
In 2020 Kris Co-Founded The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP.org) along with Bruno Basso. Together with private, industry, academic, and foundation partners they are building a distributed national-scale soil inventory system to inform soil management and markets. Through a novel combination of app-based automated sampling design, and distributed soil sampling tools allowing anyone to collect near surface soil samples, TSIP is building regional scale models capable of linking individual producer practices to measurable outcomes.

Toyin Ogunfolaju has 20 years’ experience in the infrastructure and government relations industries. She leverages public/private partnership models as the foundation to identify opportunities and practices that promote regenerative social systems. She is the Director, Social Value & Equity Americas at Jacobs. Her role supports the delivery of social-economic & equitable solutions as Jacobs delivers its core services, which may manifest itself through prioritizing equity in capital planning/execution, workforce development, local supply chain sourcing, and community/stakeholder engagement. She has expertise in executive leadership, community engagement, and operations management. She is called upon to analyze critical requirements, identify areas of opportunity, generate solutions, and implement programs. She serves as a member of the Jacobs Global Social Value & Equity Advisory Community of Practice and as a Board Member of the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, as well as chairing the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials Philadelphia Chapter Networking Committee. Recent industry recognition includes the 2021 Jacobs Harambee Black Employee Network Bridges Summit Certificate of Recognition for Contributing to Structural Change in the Broader Society, and the “Corporate Responsibility” Award for the 2023 Women of Color Magazine.

Thomas Abdallah, P.E. LEED AP, ENV SP is the Vice President and Chief Environmental Engineer for the MTA’s Construction and Development (MTA C&D) agency. Thomas holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University. He is responsible to provide expert environmental engineering services for all MTA capital projects, and ensures that all design and construction projects meet environmental requirements including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the NY State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). He is also a fierce champion of environmental sustainability issues and is responsible for MTA C&D’s certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).

Thomas is also an Adjunct Professor in Columbia University’s Sustainability Management (SUMA) graduate program in the School of Professional Studies, and the Transportation curriculum lead at the Charles B. Rangel Infrastructure Workforce Initiative at the City College of New York CUNY. He is the proud author of the book(s) Sustainable Mass Transit: Challenges and Opportunities in Urban Public Transportation (1st Edition 2017 & 2nd Edition 2023 Elsevier) and has appeared in an episode of History Channel’s Modern Marvels – Moving America.

She received the GOLD International Stevie Award for Women in Business, Woman of the Year – Technology, was selected as Outstanding Business Woman of the Year by the Phoenix Business Journal for her community leadership, professional accomplishments, and personal achievements and received the Prism Award from the Society of Women, Engineers for Outstanding Leadership in STEM.
