A catalyst is an agent that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Enzymes are biological catalysts that play many important roles in the body. In this module, students will be introduced to enzyme characteristics, how they lower reaction activation energies and are specific for certain substrates on which they act. Students will also see an example of platinum catalysis in a contact lens sterilization system, learn about environmental effects on enzyme activity, and watch a virtual lab on enzyme kinetics.
