As we journey through our lives and we learn to love ourselves through our high points and our low points, we are experiencing the "upward spiral." 

This relates to the metaphor of a tree trunk. Think of how it starts in the middle, in a tight little spiral and it goes out, and each one of the rings that you see in the tree is a record of different season over and over again.
