    • Self-Improvement

Ethan and Joey spoke with Dr. Yusra Iftikhar, PT, DPT, her upbringing starting off as a pre-med sutdent before making the jump into physical therapy while at Duke. Yusra also discussed her time in  APTA as the Student Assembly Board Director of Communications, starting with her interest in leadership, which led her to write for the North Carolina blog. In her time in this position, she developed great and plentiful networking connections and mentors at various conferences, such as National Student Conclave. We also talked about of social media presence, especially on topics like diversity, inclusivity, body positivity, eating disorders, anxiety, and equity. Yusra also talked about her journey to blogging and her social media presence, and how she blended her presence with these topics and pre-PT content. The topic of racism/systemic oppression was also discussed in regards to the school level and the health care level, and how non-POC/white individuals can be allies and impact the field, (or the world) and the importance of having a voice against inequality. We even discussed how health care professionals can combat systemic racism, such as self education on inequality, recognizing micro-aggressions, and the "pipeline to physical therapy school" concept and how to introduce and include minorities into the field of PT. Regarding body positivity, such as changing our views and methods regarding nutrition, shaming, and language, as well as standards regarding a healthy person.
