EP 10: Complications isn't a dirty word.. Normalizing the discussion around mental health & fears around type one diabetes Keeping It 100 Radio: Uncensored Diabetes Conversations
-
- Health & Fitness
We've all had the conversations in our endocrinologists office - retinopathy, neuropathy, glaucoma, nephropathy - there's quite a list of potential risks that come with a diagnosis of type one diabetes. The one thing in common? They're scary to think about, they're frequently used as a scare tactic from our physicians, and having them doesn't make you a bad diabetic.
Inside this episode, I'm chatting with a former Keeping it 100 client on her 11 years living with diabetes and how the fear of complications actually held her back from caring for her blood sugars. We get real on the emotional impact this fear creates, the stress it cultivates and how it plays a role in how we prioritize our diabetes management.
Here's what we discuss inside today's episode:
- Kayleigh's diagnosis at 15 years old and how the initial advice she received impacted how she managed her blood sugars for 10 years.
- How she came to the decision that seeking support was best for her.
- How the fear of complications stopped her from taking care of her blood sugars.
- How social media made it's impact on her mindset around diabetes complications.
- The mindset shift that helped her go from thinking "complications are inevitable" to "my journey can be different".
