Nyla Choates is a 17 year old youth activist from the Bay Area. She recently organized her own local Black Lives Matter protest in Milpitas, after she realized that it was time for her city to break silence. She was able to have not only a powerful protest, but a peaceful one with thousands of people in attendance. Nyla is extremely passionate about fighting systemic racism within the education system. To combat this, she recently started her own nonprofit called My Roots Are Rich. The mission of her nonprofit is to empower, inspire, and educate people by reinforcing the rich history of African Americans. Nyla’s favorite quote is “ You have to be the change that you want to see in the world.” She wants to be the change.
