“Now I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is [also] a minister {(diakonos): “servant,” “minister,” “attendant,” “deacon.”} of the assembly in Cenchrae, so that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the holy ones, and may assist her regarding whatever thing she may need from you; for she has been a protectress {(prostatis): “protectress,” “champion,” “leader,” “someone at the forefront.”} of many, myself included.” (Romans 16:1-2)
The Apostle Paul considered this woman — Phoebe — as a sister, and a colleague worthy of honor in the churches. It is likely that she was the Pastor over the church in Cenchrae, and was entrusted to deliver Paul's letter to the church in Rome. She was a Woman of Substance.
