Ep 88: Reinvention Does Not Mean Quit Your Job with Dorie Clark THE POWER OF REINVENTION with Kathi Sharpe-Ross

    • Personal Journals

Dorie Clark helps individuals and companies get their best ideas heard in a crowded, noisy world. She was honored as the #1 Communication Coach in the world by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards. She is also a keynote speaker and teaches executive education for Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Columbia Business School. She is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Long Game, Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of the Year by Inc. magazine.

Dorie may have had a lot of doors closed before opening some for herself by building up her own network and leaning into what she loves. She kept an eye on the change in the PR industry and to adapt to the fast-growing social media world. She now has worked for herself for the past 16 years and has written four books. Dorie observes that a lot has changed in the corporate world post-COVID. Employees will leave companies if they want to and it is up to the employers to proactively provide the tools and room for their people to thrive.

For the past six years Dorie has given herself some time to pursue other interests and passions, 20% of her time to be exact. She has been following a new passion and has learned how to write for musical theater and just finished her first project.

Some powerful takeaways from today’s episode:

Lean into what you love and figure out how to make the money later
Learn how to build your network for the long run
Make people notice you and then appreciate you - empower yourself to access the opportunities you want
Use the “what have you been up to?” question to your benefit
Employers should give people the tools they need to learn and expand their fields if wanted - far more likely to stay
Reinvention can be pro-corporate
Understand that we are entitled to live the life that we want
Feeling so busy - being busy is a form of social status
