Ep1170: Scare-a-Thon 2025: Accademia Giallo: The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971) - Live Roundtable Review

How will the Accademia Giallo crew spend Spooky Season? By digging into The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, of course! (Or should we say, "of corpse"?) Emilio Miraglia's 1971 thriller stars Anthony Steffen as Lord Alan Cunningham, a rich, mentally unstable aristocrat obsessed with his beautiful, dead wife. After terrorizing exotic dancers and prostitutes, he settles down with Gladys (Marina Malfatti), whose wedded bliss is undone by apparitions and mysterious deaths around Alan's palatial estate. Has the late Evelyn returned from beyond to haunt her husband? Or is there something more sinister at play? In this spoilerific appreciation of a truly unique gialli, the roundtable dives into Miraglia's twisted and twisty tale--appreciating the kills and killer performances, and hotly debating an ending that knocked Evelyn down several notches in Ian's estimation! Ep1167: Spooky Action Up Close: An Interview with Crispin Hellion Glover

You may know Crispin Hellion Glover as an eccentric character actor from classics films like Back to the Future, River’s Edge, and, of course, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. But he's also a committed independent filmmaker. Earlier this month, he attended the press screening for his latest movie, No! You’re Wrong. Or: Spooky Action at a Distance at Chicago's Music Box Theatre--where he also performed a half-hour historical slideshow about the art and science of rat-catching for a handful of assembled press. After the show, Ian sat down with the writer/director/star for a wide-ranging interview about his refusal to make his films available digitally; his relationship with David Lynch; the history of Surrealism; artificial intelligence in the Arts, and much more. As for the movie at hand, it would require several hours and a couple of re-watches to accurately describe (and probably not even then). The best Ian can muster is, "It's like There Will Be Blood meets Cloud Atlas, set in the Land of Make-Believe". Chicagoans! See below to learn how you can experience this one-of-a-kind evening with the man himself this very week! Or: Spooky Action at a Distance trailer. Crispin Hellion Glover returns to the Music Box this week for two unbelievable nights of movies! On Wednesday, October 22, he'll be on hand for a screening of a film he recently starred in, Mr. K. On Thursday the 23rd, he'll present his latest slideshow, followed by a screening of No! You’re Wrong. Or: Spooky Action at a Distance. He'll stick around for an hour-long Q&A and book signing--with a promise that he won't leave until the last book is signed! Ep1166: Featured Extras: F1: The Movie

Featured Extras returns with a look at Warner Bros' recently released 4K UHD of F1: THE MOVIE! Joseph Kosinski's blockbuster racing film was a much bigger hit overseas than domestically, but one of the year's best movies is now on home video--bringing with it a handful of fascinating special features. Ian has assembled a crack pit crew to talk about the various making-of segments, centering on the exciting practical-effects innovations that helped bring the film to life! Note: There was an issue with Ian's microphone while recording the segment, so there's a "talking into the room" quality to his audio. Ep1165: Tron: Ares (2025) - Live Roundtable Review

It may be "end of line" for Earth's Mightiest Critics as we sift through the corrupted-file wasteland of Tron: Ares! Jared Leto stars as the titular security program caught in the middle of a corporate struggle to bring digital avatars into the real world. Cue the light cycles, data discs, sky-beam portals, and a fistful of other jangling keys meant to distract from a story that literally sets the franchise back by more than a decade. The gang also looks at other franchises crushed under Disney’s IP onslaught, and assesses DC’s prospects for doing something different with its own blockbuster properties (spoiler alert: it’s grim). Join us for a code-bashing (and head-bashing) roundtable review--where we also take your questions, comments, and SuperChats! Ep1164: A Little Prayer (2025) - Movie Review

Ian and David unlock a May 2025 time capsule with a review of Angus MacLachlan's small town drama, A Little Prayer! The film had its Midwest premiere at the Chicago Critics Film Festival in May, and recently became available On Demand. In this spoilerific discussion, the guys dig deep into this stunningly shot, beautifully acted story about an elderly father named Bill (David Strathairn) who discovers that his son, David (Will Pullen), is cheating on his wife, Tammy (Jane Levy). Complicating matters is the return of Bill's other daughter, Narcedalia (Dascha Polanco), who has just moved back into the family home with her own kid, as they seek refuge from Narce's criminal husband. There are more twists and turns to this story, which is way more contemplative than this "Springer Show" description might suggest. Ian and David loved a lot about the film, but there are a couple of themes that rubbed one of them the wrong way. Join us for a found-family, issues-hashing good time, and check out A Little Prayer wherever you stream movies--courtesy of Music Box Films!
