Being a new parent can feel so overwhelming. With the amount of information online as well as advice or opinions from (well meaning) friends and family, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. From birth to 12 months babies reach incredible milestones quickly. But what is “normal”? How does a caregiver know when a baby is ready to start solids?; or wean from a pacifier? Or if there are underlying conditions that are impacting growth and development? Perhaps the baby is within the window of normal development and caregivers just need reassurance from a trusted medical professional that all is well. We will answer all those important questions and much more.

On this episode of Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Alisa Wang, a speech language pathologist who specializes in neonatal and pediatric feeding and swallowing. She is also a certified lactation counselor and neonatal touch and massage therapist. Alisa has worked primarily in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, and the general medicine floors. She currently works in a pediatric hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

In this episode, Argavan and Alisa talk about the stages of a healthy oral-motor development and signs to look for that require a professional evaluation. They address differences between spit up and reflux and how they impact feeding. Furthermore, Argavan and Alisa discuss breastfeeding and why it may not come naturally, rather requires mom and baby to learn this new skill. Lastly, introduction to solids is covered in detail with suggestions for best utensils and cups that support a healthy oral motor development.
