Immigrant Squared

Episode 13- Generation 1.5 Israel

I had the honor of hosting Luba Laor. Luba is one of the million immigrants who came to Israel with their family in the early 1990's when the former soviet union fell apart. Her story is featured in a recent docuseries in Israel called generation 1.5. which illustrates several stories of those children who immigrated with their parents in the early 1990's from the former soviet republics to Israel. The documentary opened a very important and long overdue debate in the Israeli society about the struggles that those children from generation 1.5 faced both at home and outside. Luba was born in the Ukraine, and immigrated to Israel in 1990. The journey to Israel was not an easy one, and several years after immigrating Luba and her family had to face a tragedy when her father committed suicide. Almost 20 years later, Luba started rediscovering her immigration journey and self reflecting. Luba shared the process of making the documentary during the pandemic, and how therapeutic it was for her, and for her mother.
