Causes about helping the world to change are all the rage right now. There are causes which focus on the environment. There are other causes which focus on the plight of children everywhere, whether it be poverty, human trafficking (a cause which I am very passionate about), or whether cell phones are rotting their brains. Still, other causes focus on human gender and sexuality, how we view ourselves as humans. There are thousands of causes around the world focused on something which needs to be fixed. Millions of ads are purchased, billions of social media posts are made, protests and marches to raise awareness are held, and billions of dollars raised to help further one cause or another.
When it comes to speaking up about what we are passionate about, this world has made it easy for us to do. The simple fact that we now have an always-connected device nearby which can feed us information on one cause or another gives us a global reach to mobilize those who are passionate about similar causes, or to help educate those that we feel should be passionate about our cause(s). However, as Christians, there is a danger here. Those aren’t the main causes we’re supposed to be focused on. We get cause confusion.
While it is easy for many Christians to openly discuss politics, the environment, or any other cause, it is rare to see Christians openly passionate and outspoken about Jesus. Hence the confusion. Jesus must be at the center of all that we do, otherwise we have to question whether we have our priorities mixed up. The Apostle Paul put it like this, “For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.” Notice that last part, we can’t be closet Christians. In everything we do, it should be made clear that our faith in Christ is the cause which drives the passion for our other causes; not the other way around. There should be no question that we are Christians.
Today, and every day, be passionate about Christ. Put Him as the priority above all other causes. Speak out about His love, grace, and mercy. Can we help our planet and society along the way? Yes. That’s how it’s all supposed to work. But we can’t be silent about our faith. Openly declare Jesus to others. Let Him be the cause which drives all of the other causes in life.
