Episode #37 - Combatting Loneliness
Today's guest expert : Duygu Balan, LPCC

Loneliness is a pervasive issue that affects people from all walks of life, and it's becoming increasingly urgent as we navigate the aftermath of the pandemic. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently declared a "loneliness epidemic" in the United States, underscoring the importance of finding ways to combat this issue. Mental health professionals like psychotherapist Duygu Balan and board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Yener Balan are at the forefront of this effort, helping individuals heal from the effects of prolonged loneliness and equipping them with tools to identify, reduce, and potentially prevent isolation and loneliness. With their innovative approach to trauma recovery and creative writing, the Balans are making a meaningful impact on the mental health and well-being of people in communities across the country.

Duygu Balan is a licensed professional clinical counselor specializing in intergenerational trauma, while Dr. Yener Balan is a board-certified psychiatrist and healthcare executive. Together, they have co-authored Re-Write: A Trauma Workbook of Creative Writing and Recovery in Our New Normal (Productivity Press / April 13, 2023), which addresses the increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders resulting from the pandemic. However, their work extends beyond the book.

As Duygu Balan and Dr. Yener Balan explain, the pandemic has brought about significant changes in our stability, sense of community, and political and economic landscapes. Because of this added stress, we're all experiencing a heightened level of sensitivity, which has resulted in multifactorial trauma responses and increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation.
