The Story of My Grandma's Life with Interstitial Cystitis and Vulvodynia The V Hive

    • Alternative Health

In this episode of The Women's Pelvic Health Podcast, my mom and I sit down and discuss the story of my Grandma's life. My Grandma passed away two years, at the age of 80, from an intentional drug overdose. She became addicted to narcotics because of the immense physical pain that she was in, and unfortunately decided to take her life.

She was diagnosed at 40 years old with Interstitial Cystitis (IC). At the time, hardly anyone knew what IC was (doctors included). My grandma made it her life mission to advocate for this condition. She was a co-founder of the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA), she lobbied in Washington DC, she started a help line in her house, she spoke on the news and much more. In addition to IC, she also had Vulvodynia, which she battled on and off for her life.

My mom and I discuss the ups and downs of her life. She lived the most beautiful life and was a magical person. She was my best friend, my role model, my warrior, my safe space and my biggest supporter. She was my life line. She was tough as hell. She had many periods of her life where she felt amazing and traveled the world. However, she also had periods where she was in horrible pain, traveling to pain clinics across the country to try and find relief.

In this episode my mom details her entire, 40 year, medical journey. This is a story of a woman who persevered, who rose above, who helped other woman, and who made an impact on everyone she knew.

Thank you for listening and I wish all of you health, healing and happiness.
