Episode 44: Dr. Cherie C. Hill Conscious Anti-Racism

    • Society & Culture

Why is the infant mortality rate of Black patients so high?
What can physicians do to help curb racism in the medical field?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Cherie C. Hill, an Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Dr. Hill gives advice to physicians on taking care of Black patients and the history of racism that still prevails in modern medicine. They discuss the epidemic of high mortality rates for Black infants and mothers and the importance of facilitating open discussions in implicit bias trainings, particularly around truly listening to (and not doubting or discrediting) their Black patients when they present for medical care.

Cherie C. Hill, MD, FACOG is an Assistant Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine. Beyond the clinical setting, Dr. Hill serves as the Wellness Ambassador and Chair of the Wellness Committee for the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and as Director of the Resident Wellness Program. Her research interests include resident well-being and determinants of preterm birth. She maintains her own wellness through participation in public service, mentorship of local students; quality time with her husband, 3 children, extended family and friends.
