Your Black Friend
Your Black Friend is a podcast about Black folks answering questions that white folks have about what it means to be Black in the United States. The truth is that many white people don’t have any Black friends, yet they’re encouraged to become allies. In each episode host, Maxwell Griffin will invite a new Black friend on and they’ll candidly answer anonymous questions submitted by white people. Ultimately, the hope is that listening to these conversations help you go beyond allyship and become a co-conspirator in the work to dismantle systemic racism.

Only one episode in and — wow. On the surface, this podcast felt like I was in the room with Maxwell and Tony. Conversational, comfortable, and on the couch with a cold beer. On a deeper level, this is refreshing, educational, and hard-hitting. It’s eye-opening to hear the firsthand experiences of being Black in America, down to what kind of COVID mask feels safer, with the candor of what truly feels like my new Black friends. I listened to this while on a run, but next time might want to take notes — on fear and the vicious cycle around it, how “you might have to drive” and what that says about our society as a whole, and how to “not only being a friend to one person, but to the broader community.” Highly recommend and looking forward to learning from the next guests. Thank you!
