Episode 52: Kim Conley Can Never Be Counted Out Runners of The Bay

    • Health & Fitness

This week we’re talking to Kim Conley, two time Olympian, pro for New Balance, UC Davis alum, who is currently chasing down a spot on the 2021 Olympic team. Kim has secured qualifying times for the 2021 US Olympic trials in the 10K and 5K. We talk about her evolution from running XC in high school on a team with Sara Hall (then Bei) to graduating UC Davis feeling like she had unfinished business, to going all in on the 2012 track trials and having her breakthrough moment and becoming a New Balance sponsored athlete. Kim shares how it was challenging to adjust to “being an Olympian” and how her mindset shifted her second time at the Olympics in 2016. Kim talks about her current training, how she is coping with the uncertainty of the Olympics this year, track meets in the time of Covid, and her excitement about ultimately turning her attention to the marathon.

Some highlights from our conversation:

🚀 Her training and mindset with less than 100 days to the trials

🧠 Training through doubts and postponements around the Olympics

💗 Taking time last year to rekindle her love for running

🚚 Decision to move to Flagstaff fulltime

🏃🏼‍♀️Running in high school with Sara Hall

🔁 Being process oriented as opposed to outcome focused

👟Her history of shoes coming off in races

⏱ Flying under the radar in the 5K by gradually chipping away at her times

🤩 Signing with New Balance and PRing after the 2012 Olympic Trials

🎽 Adjusting to “being an Olympian”

🙌 Getting excited to get after the marathon after the Olympics
