Episode 64 - Shahd Alshammari - Writing To Keep Her Head Above Water Move It or Lose it - The Podcast

    • Fitness

Shahd Alshammari is a Kuwaiti-Palestinian author and academic. She is the author of Notes on the Flesh (Faraxa Press, 2017) and Head Above Water (Neem Tree Press, 2022), and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of only 18.
Despite her doctors preparing her for a tragic life and early death, she threw herself into education - not because she wanted to achieve anything in particular, but simply for the love of learning.
In this episode, we talk about how Shahd's experiences with MS have taught her what is important, and how this is an advantage that chronically ill people have over others, particularly in light of the COVID pandemic. She also talks about how writing helped her to deal with feeling let down by her body, why women might find it harder to advocate for themselves, and her exciting plans for the future.
I loved meeting Dr. Shahd and I'm excited to support wherever her talent takes her next - as she says, "You can't do this on your own, you need an army."
