Welcome back to Analyze Scripts, where a psychiatrist and a therapist analyze what Hollywood gets right and wrong about mental health. Today, we revisit Seattle Grace Hospital as we analyze the first season of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Although the show gets some obvious stuff wrong (no intern sees the light of day!!), we were both impressed at how well they captured the emotional intensity of intern year, the first year of work following the completion of medical school. In this episode, Dr. Furey revisits many memories from her own intern year and we also discuss the high rates of mental health issues in resident physicians with a specific focus on surgical residents.
