EPISODE 8: THE MORMON CHURCH's RESPONSE TO RACISM | Eye of the Storm Eye of the Storm

    • Society & Culture

SEASON 2, BABY!   ...ok, more like a hiatus for 2,020 reasons...  In this, our 8th Episode, Zac, Jordan, Brian and Spencer discuss the LDS Church's history with race, and the approach now.  We delve into how a prophet, who is said to speak for the church on behalf of Jesus Christ (his church), could have very racist leanings.  Does that discredit him?  Does it discredit the entire church??  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!  Also, we have a new Producer, Scott Parker, who is doing excellent work already. Thanks Scotty!

READING RESOURCES:  Gospel Topics Essay https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics-essays/race-and-the-priesthood?lang=eng    Fair Mormon https://www.fairmormon.org/answers/Mormonism_and_racial_issues  Mormon Stories https://www.mormonstories.org/truth-claims/mormon-doctrine/race-skin-color/  Brigham Young Speech 1852 http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/sermons_talks_interviews/brigham1852feb5_priesthoodandblacks.htm  Revelation on the Priesthood 1978 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/od/2?lang=eng  SOME QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:  Was the Priesthood ban Doctrine or Policy?  Has the church's response to the priesthood ban been disingenuous?   Was the priesthood ban motivated by racism?  If so, how can we trust that current church policies are not also motivated by some form of prejudice and will not also be rescinded?   What does this mean about the church's claim to prophetic revelation? Is the Book of Mormon racist?   Brigham Young: Can an individual be both a racist and a prophet?  Does repentance apply to individuals only, or the whole church? Does the church need to “confess and forsake”?  What is race, and what causes racism?   How can the church make things better? Can the church make things better?

🔴 The Eye of the Storm podcast seeks to have open and honest discussions about interesting, difficult and controversial topics, such as:  human origin & condition, religion & moral framework, dogmatism, and every-day events that effect our lives during this journey on earth.  We are not experts. We are regular guys. We will make mistakes, we will be ignorant at times ... that's the reality for most of us humans.  The point of making this podcast is to show that while none of us will agree on everything, we CAN address difficult and triggering subjects without resorting to personal attacks or retreating to safe spaces. We can do this simply because we acknowledge the fact that each of us KNOWS VERY LITTLE. In fact, we likely know a lot less than we think we do. Perhaps that rings true for you as well.   We believe in both vulnerability and respect.  We also believe in entertainment... and hope you find the Eye of the Storm to be exactly that. So please, join the conversation!
