Part of why these businesses achieve exponential growth is because they can go from sensing to thinking to acting with little or often no friction on the part of the customer. For example, when a company knows a customer's history, the customer never again needs to start at "square one."

The threshold effect is yet another major factor in the art of the possible. We didn't have effective ride-hailing services until we had enough cell phones and GPS capabilities to make it a reality. This isn't new; Fast-food restaurant chains didn't take hold in earnest until the interstate highway system was deployed. Platforms allow businesses and industries to take risk and spread it across wide-spread demand—with innovation becoming the ultimate product.
