Teachings that do not speak of pain have no meaning, because humankind cannot gain something without first giving something in return. In alchemy, to obtain something, something of equal value must be lost—this is equivalent exchange.

Join hosts Ellen, Kassem, and Kayla as we read through Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa chapter by chapter, exploring every twist, turn, explosion, transmutation-gone-awry, and moment of connection (and hubris) the series has to offer. Fans old and new will enjoy deep discussion—and a few tangents and laughs along the way.

Havoc is discharged, but not off Roy’s list of allies just yet.
Ed returns to central, more sure than ever that Al’s body can be restored. Unsure of how exactly to move forward, they decide they need to learn more about the lab and the homunculi. Ed “reconnects” with his father Hohenheim in Resembool. In spite of their poor relationship, Hohenheim is able to get Ed to question if the body he and Al transmuted was truly their mother. Ed enlists Pinako to help with determining who—or what—that thing was.
In Central, Ling’s quest for immortality continues. We all learn that, as great as it seems to have a body like Al’s that feels no pain, there are some truly unpleasant side effects.
Roy’s gang tries to find away to help Havoc by talking to Dr. Marcoh, but it may be too late.

In Resembool, Ed and Armstrong join Breda and a mysterious man named Mr. Han from Xing, who sneakily leads them out of Amestris to the ruins of Xerxes. In the east he encounters some familiar faces—ones he thought he’d never see again.
The homunculi regroup after the loss from last time. Our friends in the military regroup in the hospital where Roy and Havoc are recovering, discuss what they learned, and plan their next move, but some of the crew may not be able to go any farther…

Episode 15: I’d rather stay in this body forever | Fullmetal Alchemist chapters 34–36

Ed, Al, Winry, Ling, Lan Fan, and Fu arrive in Central… where Ling promptly faints and gets picked up by the police for traveling without a passport. No one is able to break the news of Hughes’ death to Ed, Al, and Winry, but they soon find out nonetheless.
Roy continues to investigate the military and Hughes’ death with the help of Sheska. The homunculi continue to move their mysterious plans forward—Envy surveilling the military in disguise, and Lust too has a new contact within the military. With Roy getting uncomfortably close to their schemes, Envy sets a plan in motion to keep him preoccupied.
When a familiar face is accused and convicted of Hughes’ murder, an escape plan is set in motion, but it’s not quick enough for Roy, who burns the resistant convict so badly, the coroner has trouble identifying them.
Winry, then Ed and Al, visit Gracia Hughes to pay their respects and apologize. The kids are torn up about the death, especially Ed and Al, who are unsure who to trust and how to move forward in their quest to restore their bodies.
The homunculi learn of a loose end from the Lab 5 incident that needs to be tied up… but it turns out they already have what they need to find Barry the Chopper.
