Original and Powerful Ideas

Every Shade of Blue

Tis episodes explores a way of seeing all the different shades of an idea, inspired by how Vincent van Gogh could paint with every shade of blue or most any color.

THE IDEA

This approach is built on the metaphor that ideas are like “colors,” and to better “paint” with (i.e., act on) those ideas, one needs to understand them in their many different shades, an important but very uncommon practice.

THE APPLICATIONS

+ Walt Disney Imagineering’s internal “variations on a theme” trainings

+ Academia’s “examining a theory” classes

+ Individual’s “reading for many narratives” habits

+ On Your Feet’s “Story Circles” for cultural values

+ Frank Gathering's “Science, Art, Business” triple focus

KEY POINTS

~ Knowing an idea in only one shade can be useless or even dangerous

~ Today, people see so many ideas, but rarely see those ideas in their many different, deep shades

~ Many people have never taken the time to deeply think about the most important ideas to their work
