Excellent and so sad

2/3 of the way through the episodes I remembered this had happened to me too - not penetration but breast groping (while groaning) by one doctor, nipple squeezing by another, and the placement of a tampon without my consent at my first gyno appointment. A doctor in Europe asked me to walk naked across his large office to “check my spine”. 🥲 These things happen so quickly and so unexpectedly.

These survivors resonates with me.

Listening to this makes me want to tell my own story, which isn’t SA at the hands of a doctor, but an incident that happened at the Glenn Hotel, an autograph collection hotel owned by Marriott, in downtown Atlanta in Oct. 2017. The way the concierge treated me (tried to make me return to the bathroom where it happened to wash my hands until the woman visiting from NYC who told the front desk that a woman is screaming in the bathroom stood up for me and insisted they find me another sink), the way the corporate office was hostile to me and appeared angry that I was contacting them to preserve surveillance evidence for the detectives to pick up the next day. Even the rage I felt as the police tried to dissuade me from making a police report, until they found out the friend that accompanied me worked in the public defender’s office and another friend who worked in the Fulton County DA’s office called me while I was at the police station. After I took his call, the police captain suddenly made calls to detectives to come talk to me and go to investigate at the hotel immediately.

I made the choice to not move forward with a law suit, because I WAS AFRAID OF NOT BEING BELIEVED. I keep hearing Marisa and Evelyn say this, and I know exactly what they mean. To have an event that strips you of your security and peace questioned and possibly spurned as lies by a jury feels monumental. These women are so brave to expose an institution set on covering up misconduct and sexual abuse of their patients. I am only 3 episodes in but I’m rooting for them.

The desire for anonymity is a desire to shield loved ones from the pain of knowing this awful thing happened, and a desire to preserve some portion of life/acquaintances in the state before your personhood was violated. My family still doesn’t know anything happened. But it severely affected my life for years. I was set to start a new job 3 weeks after the incident and too scared to explain what happened, I started the job. I couldn’t use the bathroom all day, and literally drank water minimally and held it for 10-12 hrs until I got home. My mind was in constant panic mode, I couldn’t focus and I listened to audio instructions on calming down my nervous system on my way to work and throughout the day to not fall into a panic attack. I didn’t last long.
Even now, I insist every woman take their phones with them to the bathroom at restaurants, I insist my friend’s girls go to the bathroom together when out in public. Anytime I use a public restroom I have heart palpitations. I accompany ppl to the bathroom even if I don’t have to go just in case I have to go later and no one is around to go with me. I’m invited to a friend’s bday party in Atl next month and I’m already petrified of staying at a hotel alone.
