Move Your Way to Business Success

If you are an entrepreneur, chances are your business comes first, often at the expense of your health and wellbeing. Our guest for this episode of Small Biz Power says it’s time to focus on you. In order to be successful, she says, you have to shift your mindset and take time to move every day.
Courtney Bentley is the host of the Fit and Fabulous podcast. She holds certifications as a Personal Trainer and Behavioral Change specialist. She teaches people how to live a lifestyle of wellness.
She spends much of her time coaching other female entrepreneurs. But her advice is universal. In this episode, Courtney will share her tips for adopting a healthy lifestyle… some of it may sound a bit woo-woo to the skeptics out there, but much of it is practical. If you are struggling to stay healthy as you build your business, don’t miss this episode.
Questions I ask Courtney Bentley: Why is “self-love” so important and how does a lack of it affect your business? What tips do you have for making time for health and wellness? What’s the best way to manage stress? What are moon cycles and how do they play into behavioral change? What You’ll Learn If You Listen: How Courtney overcame what she calls her “self-hate” and how that’s changed her life Why falling back in love with yourself leads to more money and success Why movement is key to a successful life and business Three tips for adding movement to your day even if you think you don’t have time How to overcome the after dinner sugar craving (simple but powerful) Links to Things We Talked About & Follow Courtney Bentley on Social Media: Courtney Bentley's Website Fit Fierce Fabulous Podcast on Instagram Courtney Bentley on Instagram Courtney Bentley on Facebook Fit Fierce And Fabulous Podcast Facebook Group Grab a Free Guided Meditation to Release Your Limiting Beliefs Here! E022 Making Small Shifts for Big Results in Your Business

E022 Making Small Shifts for Big Results in Your Business

Ah, the world of business coaching. There’s no shortage of “coaches” ready to help take your business to the next level. I put coaches in quotes because with all the noise online these days, it’s not always easy to decipher the legit coaches (with real-world business transformation experience) from the fly-by-night social media coaches who are self-qualified by the last business book they read.
The right coach can catapult your business. The wrong coach equals money and time wasted. In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is Tim Furlong, a nationally recognized speaker, facilitator & executive coach. Tim tackles business coaching qualifications, including the right questions to ask to determine if your coach is a good fit for you and more importantly if he or she is qualified to help you grow.
Tim wrote the book, “Quarter Turns,” and created the “Quarter Turns” coaching program which enables leaders to identify small shifts in approach and behavior that yield highly impactful, sustainable results.
Tim is also a partner in The Simmons Group here in Las Vegas.
Questions I ask Tim Furlong: If I’m a business owner, why is it so important to work with a coach? What questions should I ask a coach to determine if they are the best fit for my needs? What common issues do most business owners face – what inspires them to search for a coach? What do you love and find most challenging about coaching? What You’ll Learn If You Listen: How Tim went from traveling musician to executive coach Why “edutainment” is a crucial part of how Tim delivers his coaching Why it’s not a coach’s job to have all the solutions/answers for his/her clients The one question you MUST ask before hiring a coach Why a coaching “certification” doesn’t necessarily legitimize a coach or make them the right fit for you The red flag that will tell you early on in the coaching relationship if your coach is not capable of helping you get results Links to Things We Talked About & Follow Tim Furlong on Social Media: Quarter Turns – the Book Quarter Turns Coaching Program Quarter Turns Website Tim’s Present Like a Pro Program The Simmons Group Las Vegas Website Nina’s Performance Coach, Bill Cakmis Quarter Turns on Facebook Quarter Turns on Twitter Tim Furlong on LinkedIn Like what you hear? E021 Helping Sick Children Take Flight

E021 Helping Sick Children Take Flight

You can view a transcript of this podcast on Radetich Marketing + Media.
Las Vegas has a lot of secrets… but some of those secrets need to be told. Our community is home to many nonprofits who work tirelessly to help those who need it most. You may not know, though, that we are also the home base for a national nonprofit that’s helping children all over the country take flight.
In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is the CEO of Miracle Flights, Mark Brown. Mark talks about the work Miracle Flights does to help sick children fly to other cities to get specialized care or second opinions.
We talk about what inspired the founder to start the organization 32 years ago, how the organization has evolved (you may remember it as Angel Flights or Angel Planes) and what Mark and his team are doing to increase the number of flights they provide every month.
Mark has a business background. We talk about how that plays into how he runs the organization, and why he calls this the “best job in the world.”
Questions I ask Mark Brown: What is it like running a nonprofit (when you have a business background)? What do the families you’ve helped tell you about what this means to them? What makes Las Vegas a great home base for Miracle Flights? What are your goals for the organization? What You’ll Learn If You Listen: Why nonprofits have to be thought of as businesses and how there’s a change in the narrative around running them as such The founder’s story – why she started Miracle Flights and how she’s been touched personally by its mission The gap Miracle Flights fills within our country’s medical system (simple, but powerful) A game-changing partnership with UFC – what it means for Miracle Flights What Miracle Flights did to help the families affected by the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival here in Las Vegas How you can get involved in this amazing organization Links to Things We Talked About & Follow Miracle Flights on Social Media: Levi – 100,000th flight recipient Levi – commercial with Forrest Griffin Miracle Flights Website Miracle Flights on Facebook Miracle Flights on Twitter Miracle Flights on YouTube Learn More about Mark Brown, CEO Donate to Miracle Flights Like what you hear? Building a Modern Company in a Traditional Industry

Building a Modern Company in a Traditional Industry

“The average age of a mortgage professional is 56,” says Coby Baker, CEO of Alderus Mortgage. And yet the modern workforce is behind that by about 25 years. That’s why Coby, who is also the President of the Nevada Mortgage Lenders Association, is working so hard to develop the millennial breed of mortgage pros.
In this episode, we talk about what he’s doing to build a millennial-friendly culture in a traditional industry, how he’s building a bridge between the older workers in the industry and this new crop of youngsters, why he’s committed to helping people reach their fullest potential and his lofty goals for his company.
Coby moved from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas in 2003 and founded Alderus Mortgage. Since then, Alderus has been named one of the top companies in Nevada and one of the top 100 mortgage employers in America.
Coby speaks and teaches at industry events. He’s also an active member of his local community and regularly volunteers at the Las Vegas Humane Society.
Questions I ask Coby Baker: Why is “developing people” at the top of your list for business growth? What are you doing to build the millennial workforce and engage it in an industry that’s known as “old school?” What makes the Alderus approach to mortgages unique? What does the future look like for the mortgage industry? What You’ll Learn If You Listen: Why Coby says the office environment at Alderus is key to developing his team faster How a dog-friendly office affects his employees and potential hires The unique challenges that come with running a family-owned business and how Coby, his wife, and his brother have structured their roles so people stay in their lane Where Coby got the confidence to start a management firm at the age of 19 – yes, a firm that told business owners how to improve their business - when he was straight out of high school Coby is a natural risk-taker, however, he admits to some fear in this episode The out-of-the-box marketing tactics he’s using to help grow his business Why education and speaking have been crucial to the company’s development Links to Things We Talked About & Follow Alderus Mortgage on Social Media: Alderus Mortgage Website Alderus Mortgage Facebook Page Alderus Mortgage Twitter Coby Baker on LinkedIn Like what you hear? Build Your Business Through the Power of Connection

Build Your Business Through the Power of Connection

What is the role of a chamber of commerce in the business community?  It involves more than you might think.  In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is Lisa Chao, the Vice President of Membership for the Henderson Chamber of Commerce.
Lisa’s career spans 20-years in the realm of business development. She’s a Las Vegas native and known as a go-to “business connector” throughout Southern Nevada.
Currently, in her role at the Henderson Chamber, Lisa directs the organization’s long-term member development goals, including sales strategies and effective programming. When she’s not working, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family attending sporting events, including those from her alma mater, UNLV.
Lisa and I cover a lot of ground in this episode, including what the chamber is doing in the wake of the tragic mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip.
    Questions I ask Lisa Chao:
What is the toughest part about convincing people to join the chamber? What are the most common problems small business owners face? What’s unique about doing business in Las Vegas? What’s on the horizon for businesses in Las Vegas with the addition of two major league sports teams?  What You’ll Learn If You Listen:
How you as a business owner can give back to the victims of the Las Vegas Strip shooting What you can gain from chamber membership and how many members they currently have The difference between the Henderson Chamber and the Las Vegas Metro Chamber and why you don’t need a Henderson address to be a member Why there’s more to the Henderson Chamber than just networking Links to Things We Talked About & Follow the Henderson Chamber on Social Media:

Connecting Las Vegas Through Social Media

Connecting Las Vegas Through Social Media

On this episode of Small Biz Power, we’re talking to the amazing social media team at the city of Las Vegas.  This small, but mighty team manages the city’s communication strategy on all of its social platforms – from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Snapchat to YouTube.  Can you imagine what their editorial calendar looks like?
The team is made up of:
Jennifer Davies Natasha Shahani Shane Savanapridi Jennifer originally wanted to be a lawyer. Then a publicist. Then she got a Twitter account and the rest is history. She is the very first person the city ever hired to focus solely on social media.
Natasha risked it all and moved from Los Angeles to help launch the Life is Beautiful festival. She handled all of the marketing and media requests during the first festival.
Shane has an incredibly diverse background in photography, web design, videography, you name it. At the city, they jokingly say that he is the only one who could single-handedly run the entire department (including a TV station!)
These three create and post all the content on the city’s social media channels, but their social media strategy goes beyond just broadcasting.  They use these online platforms as a tool for engaging with the community, soliciting feedback, and monitoring chatter around key issues and events.
Small business owners can learn a lot from their integrated approach to social media.
Questions I ask the City Social Media Team
How does social media fit with the city’s overall communication strategy? Why is it so important for the city to be engaged on social media?  How do you keep up with the never-ending comments/conversations? How difficult has it been to get buy-in from council members on the importance of social media and the importance for them personally to be involved and engaged? What role does social media play in decision making? How are you using video on social media and why is it so crucial? What You’ll Learn If You Listen:
Why the perception that they sit around and eat donuts and tweet all day is dead wrong How the team uses statistics to drive their content strategy The role of social media in monitoring how the city’s message is received Why responding on social media (to good or bad posts) is so important for brands big and small Who’s really running the council members’ Twitter accounts How creating a system for engaging can help small businesses Links to Things We Talked About & Follow the City on Social Media:
