Jolly good

I won’t say that I think the details of the premise hold together completely. But the longing for a country you can’t return to is a theme that is beautifully expressed here and I commend the ability of the creators to tap into that via performance and dialogue alone confined to Calais. We have no idea what England is like in 2037 but it doesn’t matter. Dream or nightmare, it’s home. And of course the production quality is impeccable. From the waves upon the shores of Calais to the drone of vehicles and the blast of ship horns making for an unnerving score, this show is entirely successful at immersing you in the place that it is creating. Also, I Vow To Thee My Country, when tied to this subject material, is just one of those songs that’s guaranteed to stab you in the heart.

Sound Balance is Off

There are two narrative styles here, the journalistic sounding one and then the first person dramatic one. The sound gets a bit muddled at times with the sound effects and ambience overpowering the dialog. And the 3D sound is maybe a bit overused so some sounds move that would make more sense if they were stationary, and vice versa. But it’s cool to listen to see how that works. The plot was maybe more of an afterthought? It left me thinking more about the recording techniques and stuff.
