Portia Allen - Integrating Social Justice with Faith

It's been two years since I published a Coffee & Honeycomb episode. TWO YEARS. If you're listening to this, thank you for tuning in after all these years. This episode is special to me and I think you'll really enjoy it.Today I’m talking to Portia Allen who is a speaker, educator, pastor, mother, and wife. First, I open up by sharing why I took such a long break from the podcast, and then we dive into the topic of race and the church. We discuss what it was like to be in Minnesota last summer during the tragic murder of George Floyd. We discuss racial reconciliation in the church, how do we integrate social justice with faith, how do we gain conviction and wisdom, and so much more.I hope this conversation encourages and convicts you the way it did to me wherever you are in your faith journey. If you want more of Portia, you can find her at https://www.instagram.com/portiallen/. If you liked this episode or found anything blessing, I'd love to hear from you. IG: @coffeeandhoneycomb

EmilyAnnUdel ,

Thank you ❤️

I just started listening (I found you by searching #christianpodcast on IG in a moment of real sadness the other night) and felt God pull me in when I saw you interviewed Meagan Gonzalez or Mae Mae. I started my graphic design biz about 8 years ago and she was someone I looked up to for so so long. I even reached out to her once as I was starting up and she was kind enough to respond. It’s something I will never forget. I. My current season I’m knee deep in new motherhood and really having a bit of a tough time with my identity (2 yr old and 3 month old)... God also seems to be telling me to slow down and pull back from graphic design. To hear someone I look up to so much say the exact same just made me feel like I could breath again. Like that is God speaking to me, telling me he’s got me, we’ll be ok. Just let go & surrender. I appreciate your work and the wonderful, tough questions you asked. Very excited to keep listening. I truly needed this right now.

Lively, light-hearted, illuminating

Listening to this podcast makes you feel like you're there amongst a pair of friends, sipping a warm cup of intelligentsia coffee...with honeycomb? Hehe. For a podcast that's just started out, it's impressive the polish that it has. The guests are noteworthy and the back and forth between the host and guests are comfortably authentic. Jenny (the host) is really gifted at having organic conversations with the guests that are both easy to listen to and meaningful. Perfect combo for a podcast IMO.

The topic itself deserves attention. If I were to describe it in two words: faith + instagram. More specifically, it's like if you went behind the scenes of an Instagram post to dive into the person's real life and how spirituality shapes them. In an age where social media is dominated by putting up an image (well literally, but I mean figuratively), pushing a product/service, developing your brand -- this podcast provides much-needed balance. Not that it's depressing, but more so real. Ever think to yourself, this instagrammer has such a beautiful, interesting life based upon the images they share? Let me tell you, there's more beauty to be discovered beneath those images, hardships, imperfections and all. This podcast proves it.
