Thomas Dolby's 80:10 (pt 2: Prefab Sprout, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Film Work, Aliens Ate My Buick)

Thomas Dolby's 80:10 (pt 2: Prefab Sprout, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Film Work, Aliens Ate My Buick)

We return to part two of Thomas Dolby's 80:10 with production work with two songwriting icons; one massively successful the other less so, plus playing Live Aid with yet another. Plus lots of film work and a technicolour third solo album...

    6. PREFAB SPROUT (1985-89)

Producer for Steve McQueen, From Langley Park to Memphis and Jordan: The Comeback (recorded 1989, released in 1990, pedants!)

    7. DAVID BOWIE (1985)

Keyboards for Bowie at Live Aid, playing on TVC 15, Modern Love, Rebel Rebel and "Heroes".

    8. JONI MITCHELL (1985)

"Producer" for Dog Eat Dog and a definite contrast to his experiences with Paddy and Davy Jones.

    9.  FILM WORK (1985-87)

Scored Fever Pitch (no, not that one) and did the songs for Howard The Duck (yes, that one) as well as a rather impressive score for Gothic.

    10. ALIENS ATE MY BUICK (1988)

The third album. Contains the BEST SONG HE EVER DID (fact!)

    80SOGRAPHY QUICKFIRE ROUND

to finish. Including the favourite question I have ever asked (with a perfect answer)

    2. FOREIGNER (1981)

Musician for hire for Foreigner as well as Def Leppard, Malcolm McLaren & Belinda Carlisle

    The first album

    4. SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE (1982)

TransmissionDJ ,

Dig '80s music? You'll dig this podcast!

As a music industry veteran and someone who has worked with many of the artists being discussed in this podcast through the decades, it was an excellent surprise to have "80sography" appear in my feed recently. I'm six episodes in and can't wait to explore the rest! Mark is a stellar host making his guests feel like this won't be just another interview in the endless promotional interview cycle. His sharp humor and inclusion of his children hits in all the right ways and is a nice touch. As someone who reads musician autobiographies and consumes music documentaries weekly, you'll many times hear the bits that aren't brought up in the books and on film. Highly recommended...and long live the '80s - ography!

Good but…

I enjoy the interviews, but the sound quality on some of them is so bad they’re unlistenable.

Amazing series. A must listen for fans of music production of any era.

Just look at the list of people interviewed and the length of the interviews and that should tell you how great this podcast is.
Everything that you could every want to know is covered. I’ve listened to too many music production podcasts, most are crap, this one is the best. I hope it keeps going for a very long time. Thank you for creating it and seeking these geniuses out.
