Tensions Boil Over On The Plot Against America - S1 E5 'The Plot Against America' After Show

It’s been two years since Lindbergh was elected president and the Levin family is going through some growing pains.  After their feud with Evelyn over Sandy’s attendance at the White House, Bess and Herman receive notice that they’ve been recruited for “Homestead 42” compliments of Evelyn and Rabbi Bengelsdorf.  Sandy is all for the move, but his parents believe it is a trap. Bess goes to plead with Lionel to no avail. Phillip goes to talk to his Aunt Evelyn to tell her that he doesn’t want his family to move across the country.  He begs her to send another family in their place, ultimately getting Seldon and his mother relocated. Monty has a new job, and his eyes on a new girl. Evelyn and Lionel get married and Lionel begins to see that his position in this economical, as well as religious, climate is not so secure.

Get a clue!

I know you guys are not historians but the basic facts of history have completely eluded you. When you make predictions about the next episode, it might be good to review them afterward. You’re almost completely wrong in what you think will happen and it’s because you know nothing about history.

In the real life of the times, the decision about entering the war against the Nazis was a very big issue. FDR’s faction wanted to get in or at least help England fight off the Germans. This was not a majority opinion and FDR was forced to settle for halfway measures until Pearl Harbor destroyed the isolationist sentiment. That is a key point of the series and you never discuss it. Please Google “isolationism”.

This book is all about growing up Jewish in America in that era. Questions about assimilating into American culture and all that entailed were amplified by the facts of what Adolf Hitler was doing to their people.

Alvin was a troubled young man, but his actions were all about fighting this evil. If you didn’t think our government was doing enough to fight Hitlerism one thing a young man might do was join the war effort and that meant leaving the US where it was actually illegal to join the war. And this was the case even in real life, not just the fictional world of President Lindbergh. Numbers of Jewish men made this choice and it wasn’t necessarily crazy. And in that context the fact that “their country had not been attacked” and your criticism of Alvin’s decision in those grounds misses the whole point that America didn’t feel to Alvin like his country.

The book on which this was based was written by the Jewish novelist Philip Roth and its all about how different Jews experienced and thought about the events of the time. If you think about it, every Jew in the series has a different take on these issues. It’s not about how to be a good parent which you focused way too much on. It’s about how hard it was to be a good parent in such times. Cast your eyes across the ocean to the Jews and other people just trying to stay alive in conditions of Nazism and war. Care to give THOSE people tips on how to be a good parent? Roth’s point is that it was stressful to be a Jew on this side of the pond in that era, not nearly as bad as in Europe, but some ways down that road.

It’s also autobiographical to some extent. Roth based the Philip character on himself. Roth’s work is all about being an American Jew.

Three Truly Ignorant People

The three “critics” babbling on about this excellent HBO production display their sheer ignorance with every inarticulate utterance. Who and why would anyone with even a modicum of intelligence or intellect produce such a podcast?!! It really is a pathetic disgrace. Any instructor who has ever had any responsibility for educating these 3 dolts, should be horrified!
