Life Is A Dance ft. Ben Chung (Kinjaz founder & Jabbawockeez dancer) | Rooted Recovery Stories #148

On this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with Ben “BTEK” Chung, co-founder of Kinjaz and former member of the Jabbawockeez, a world-famous dance group who first gained popularity from their 2006 appearance on “America’s Best Dance Crew”.

His recovery from grief and trauma has made an impact on many other’s road to healing through his virtual dance class studio, Kinjaz and the podcast he hosts, “STEEZY”. Through his struggles, Ben has learned how his creative expression can be much more than a hobby, and serve as a cathartic release and grounding force.

    About Ben Chung:
Ben Chung is one of the co-founders of the Kinjaz, but unlike Mike and Anthony, Ben did not join the group til 2014 after his departure from the famous Jabbawockeez. Ben is notably known for being a member of the Jabbawockeez who had won the first season of America's Best Dance Crew and which also had the largest influence on modern dance crews right now. Ben would compete again in season 8 of Amerca's Best Dance Crew along with Anthony Lee, Mike Song, Vinh Nguyen, M-Pact and Villin Lor, Darren Wong, and Pat Cruz in 2015.

    About Kinjaz:
Established in 2010, Kinjaz is a band of brothers on a quest to fearlessly explore the depths of their imagination and artistic purpose. With over 30 total members, including individuals who specialize in other skills besides dance, they consider ourselves an “Artist’s brotherhood,” and are known for their signature intricate choreography style and creative storytelling through dance and new media. Their shared objective is to cultivate “Kin at all costs”, support each other to reach their highest collective potential, and to positively impact the world with their time and abilities in the most fun way possible. They are the movement in the shadows. Respect all…Fear none.

A Glimmer of Hope ft. Hollywood Stunt-Double Kimberly Shannon Murphy | Rooted Recovery Stories #147

A Glimmer of Hope ft. Hollywood Stunt-Double Kimberly Shannon Murphy | Rooted Recovery Stories #147

On this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with Hollywood’s go-to stunt woman, Kimberly Shannon Murphy. As an award-winning stuntwoman, she was intimate with pain. For years, she propelled her body through dangerous spaces—medicating the trauma of her childhood sexual abuse with the adrenaline rush that came from pushing herself to the absolute limit. But as Kimberly learned, no matter how much you suppress your past, it always catches up with you.

In her new book, Glimmer, Kimberly details her remarkable journey to the top of her field as a Hollywood stuntwoman for many A-list celebrities, including Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Sandra Bullock, while carrying the pain of her childhood of sexual abuse in a family that refused to acknowledge its reality. In her beautifully written, unflinchingly honest memoir, Kimberly reflects on her past and present, chronicling her path to recovery and calculating the long shadow of trauma.

Her story of surviving abuse and her journey to healing herself is both jarring and profound, and her strength is second to no one. She is a gift who anyone needs a reminder that true healing is possible, and that your relationship with your inner child is critical to that recovery process. She has learned to protect herself at all costs, and lets the viewer know that there is light on the other side of the darkness.

    About Kimberly Shannon Murphy:

Kimberly Shannon Murphy is Hollywood’s go to Stunt Double for Premier Silver Screen actresses. Her resume is loaded with top box office films such as The Lone Ranger, Oblivion, Jack Reacher, Hunger Games, Savages, Men in Black 3, Knight and Day and the list goes on.

    About her book

Glimmer: A Story of Survival, Hope, and Healing

Glimmer is the story of one woman’s quest to reclaim her life and to shine a spotlight on the dark topic of intergenerational familial abuse. As Kimberly reveals, being strong isn’t about getting your black belt, leaping out of four-story buildings, or putting 200-pound stuntmen in chokeholds—it’s about waking up every single morning and choosing to love yourself, no matter your history.

A heroic and hopeful story of stolen innocence, pain, courage, and survival, Glimmer is an emotional roadmap for others who have suffered abuse and childhood trauma, offering them hope, healing, and inspiration.

    Reviews

'This book is so much more than the sum of its parts. It is a gift. It is Kimberly's offering to readers suffering in silence. It is a companion for anyone who has endured trauma, at any level. And it is a beautiful tribute to the strength and power of the human spirit.' — Cameron Diaz

“An intimate and vulnerable portrait of the long-term impacts of our most painful childhood experiences, Glimmer is a beautifully written and empowering story of resilience that offers a glimmer of hope for all survivors of childhood abuse and trauma.” — Nicole LePera, Ph.D., author of the number one New York Times bestseller How to Do the Work
