    144. But What Is Gentle Nutrition?

    144. But What Is Gentle Nutrition?

In this podcast episode, we explore the concept of Gentle Nutrition, explained as combining basic nutritional knowledge with body attunement. This 10th principle of Intuitive Eating is about recognizing how different foods affect one’s body while maintaining a non-restrictive approach to eating.
We also touch on personal experiences with nutritional adjustments post-recovery from eating disorders -- how and when do you think about nutrition when you're learning to allow all foods?? Does anti-diet have a "middle ground" or does it promote choosing "junk food"?
As with every discussion on this podcast, there is nuance.
Eating choices can be balanced with nutritional wisdom, like combining carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber for satisfying meals, or choosing warmer foods for comfort. It's leaning into attunement to our needs rather than just "rules".
We also want to mention our upcoming events including Stef's gentle nutrition course designed to support you in exploring these concepts without judgment or rigidity. And, in-person events in England this May!

    143. But My Body is Aging

    143. But My Body is Aging

This conversation discusses the challenges of confronting the aging process, with Sarah sharing a recent moment of seeing photographs of herself and thinking she looked...well, older. This introspection is mirrored by a conversation about Stef's Wednesday Weekly email, which talked about the "emergency" feeling of noticing differences in sagging skin and redistribution of body proportions approaching middle age.
As the conversation unfolds, it touches upon a broader philosophical reflection on aging, not just as a physical process but as an emotional and existential journey.
We contemplate the societal and personal implications of aging, from the fear of invisibility and loss of value in a youth-centric culture to the liberating aspects of growing older, such as gaining freedom.
We talk about the complexity of body image issues, drawing parallels between the struggles with weight and the acceptance of aging.
And don't forget, if you'd like to meet us for an in-person event, we've got two coming up in May 2024. We're teaming up with Marcus Kain of Strong Not Starving for an evening social & talks in Brighton, and a day retreat for nervous system regulation at Bournemouth Beach.

    142. But What If Food Gets Me Through the Day?

    142. But What If Food Gets Me Through the Day?

In this podcast episode, the hosts explore the complex relationship between food and emotional needs. The conversation begins with a reflection on Stef's Instagram post suggesting that food serves as a portal to solitude, comfort, pleasure, and escape, making the idea of changing one’s relationship with food seem like a sacrifice of essential coping mechanisms. The discussion delves into personal anecdotes and reflections on how food has occupied significant mental and emotional real estate, offering a sense of engagement or distraction during times of discomfort or emptiness.
The conversation shifts to the concept of "spoon theory" as a metaphor for energy and capacity management, illustrating how individuals have limited resources to cope with daily demands. This leads to a broader discussion on the importance of recognizing one’s own limits and allowing oneself the grace to rest without self-judgment. The episode emphasizes the significance of self-awareness and giving oneself permission to meet needs in more diverse and healthy ways, including acknowledging the importance of physical touch and emotional support.
Throughout, the hosts engage with their live community, incorporating questions and comments that enrich the conversation.

    141. "But I Did Feel More Confident in a Smaller Body" with guest Stephanie Dodier

    141. "But I Did Feel More Confident in a Smaller Body" with guest Stephanie Dodier

In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident.
Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment.
The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be.
Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them.

    140. But I love those "What I Eat in a Day" Videos

    140. But I love those "What I Eat in a Day" Videos

In this playful and insightful episode, our hosts dive into the intriguing world of "What I Eat in a Day" videos and the complex feelings they evoke. They kick things off with a light-hearted banter about the unexpected topics that might arise in a conversation about daily diets, quickly steering the conversation towards the deeper curiosity and comparison that drive people towards these videos.
Our hosts explore the reasons behind the allure of watching what others eat, ranging from simple curiosity about others' lives to seeking guidance or reassurance in one's own eating habits. They acknowledge how social media, with its highlight reels, can skew perceptions of normalcy in eating, often showcasing unrealistic or highly curated snapshots of people's diets.
Interestingly, they touch upon the psychological aspect of watching others eat, discussing how it can serve as a form of vicarious eating for those restricting their diets or as a reassurance that one's own eating habits are okay. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn as they consider the potential harm in comparing one's eating habits with those depicted in such videos, especially for individuals with disordered eating patterns looking for a benchmark of "normalcy."
Wrapping up, they touch upon the concept of gentle nutrition, introducing an upcoming course focused on the mindset around nutrition rather than the specifics of what to eat. This approach aims to ease the tension around dietary choices, encouraging a more relaxed and self-compassionate approach to food and eating habits. The episode concludes on a light note, leaving listeners with food for thought about their own consumption of "What I Eat in a Day" content and how it impacts their relationship with food.

    139. Review of "Overcoming Binge Eating" by Christopher Fairburn

    139. Review of "Overcoming Binge Eating" by Christopher Fairburn

Overcoming Binge Eating by Christopher G Fairburn has been adopted by the NHS as the gold standard approach for binge eating recovery. This episode offers our personal and professional opinions on the OBE approach and is not meant as a substitute for, or a deterrent against, using this book as part of your own recovery process.
    We discuss:
Who is Fairburn and how did he start working with BED? Where CBT puts the onus of responsibility Who this book might appeal to Step One is Monitoring -- what do we think of this tool? Is self-awareness always beneficial? What does it look like? Step Two is Regular Eating The oversimplicity of "reasonable portions" Step Three: Alternatives to Binge Eating The irony of black and white thinking as a strategy to overcome black and white thinking Do you always have to learn from someone who has the experience of the ED? (note to listeners that Fairburn did not ever have an ED) Step Four: Problem Solving The incredible fatphobia implicit in this book Fairburn's view on addiction Join the LAD Membership

Good but only one of the hosts is helpful

Stephanie needs to interrupt less, talk slower, relax, talk less, let sarah speak more. Her presence detracts.

Must-Listen for anyone who struggles with food...

Been listening non-stop for the last week. I find such comfort in hearing your voices and the way you explain not only the struggles, but also present the strategies for recovery. When I’m done with all of these I plan to just start at the beginning again. Keep up the great work, and thank you from a truly grateful new fan!

Honest and helpful

Makes me feel a tiny bit less broken. Plus I love it when they laugh.
