Please join us for the Frank McClelland series, who was featured in the book The American Saint Nick. This however is his story in his own words, dissected through an audio recording that he made in the early 1990's. To help lend some personal anecdotes about Frank, we are honored to have co-hosts Peter Lion (author of "The American Saint Nick" and "Merge"), son of Richard Brookins (the original American Saint Nick) David Brookins and Frank's grand daughter Mrs. Priscilla Forney. Frank covers his training stateside, in England and his duties in France as the 28th Infantry fought across thru Paris, the Hurtgen Forest and ultimately Wiltz, Luxembourg where he fought in the outset of the battle of the bulge and became a POW. He then details his struggles after the war as a former POW and PTSD that stayed with him the rest of his life.

🔒 Azeez Alrifaie aka "Simon": Series 35, ALL episodes - Iraqi interpreter for the US Armed Forces, Operation Desert Freedom, the "Surge"

    Subscriber-only episode
Azeez volunteered to assist the US Armed forces in Iraq as an interpreter during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the "Surge", when sectarian strife left Iraq in chaos.  In this series, Azeez shares his account of having his father murdered by members of a local militia which led to Azeez becoming an interpreter where he was seen as a traitor...all while being exposed to the dangers affiliated with working on the front lines with the US Armed forces in what amounted to a civil war.
This is a timely conversation as recently released movies (i.e. "The Covenant" and "Interpreters Wanted") illustrate the bond interpreters had with their US-led teams and the fate of many of them after the US Armed forces left.

Review

Having studied WWII, WWI and the American civil war for most of my 60 years on this earth; this podcast coupled with Ray Harris’s History of WWIi pod has taught me and entertained me more than I could have imagined. Thanks for being serious about your subjects without losing your sense of humor. Especially, the self deprecating humor and the teasing of each other. All of it is pure enjoyment for me. Lynn

About Leo and Russian

Yes the Red Army did everything he described and more And I always thought it was Cold War propaganda that Russians smelled Until I had to escort a international observer Russian on a job To long to explain I was told by a State Department official to don't dare joke or say a word when I met the Russian inspector About the body odor Yes they do smell God awful Don't know if it's what the eat or the fact at that time (USSR) They only got hot water 1 time a week for a shower In Soviet apartment houses

Veterans #1 ,

Great job Ryan and Tony!

Thank you for interviewing all those great veterans. I’ve enjoyed everyone of them usually on long drives. The Bill Parker series is probably at the top although they’re all good. You guys do a great job giving us the big picture and make it very entertaining.
Thanks
