Living in Your Car at Age 70

On this episode, Rabbi Joshua talks with Suzanne, a woman who has seen a great many challenges in her life, including cancer and the loss of her parents and siblings in just a few short years. Before getting sick, she was a successful paralegal with a solid career and a stable life. She tells her story of going from that place to living in her car for 2 years to finally getting back into housing. She has been a regular at The Women's Room and has been working at the Bad Weather Shelter this season.

2024-3 My Dog is My Home: Emotional Support Animals Save Lives

2024-3 My Dog is My Home: Emotional Support Animals Save Lives

It is often said that "dogs are a person's best friend." This is certainly true, and perhaps more so, for our unsheltered neighbors experiencing homelessness. On this episode, Rabbi Joshua speaks with Christine Kim, founder of a non-profit called My Dog is My Home, which does advocacy work around the issues of emotional support animals specifically for the population living on the streets. In addition, he is joined by Nora Mathison, the current MSW intern in The Women's Room, who has focused her attention recently on the ladies who have dogs and how TWR can better support them. This is a really interesting conversation!

Our staff has grown, our budget has grown, our visibility has grown, our volunteers have grown, we have new board members and we are in the midst of a serious strategic planning process. 2024 is set to be a big year!

Love the Stories from the Street segment

Hearing people’s stories is such a great reminder that the overwhelming numbers of people experiencing homelessness are, in fact, individual people with very unique stories. If we all did a little more listening, just imagine the empathy our world would have.

Thought-provoking & relevant

This podcast helps me understand the homelessness crisis in my community and how I can help. It also addresses the big questions that inform social justice work. A real gem!
