The Connection Between Mental Illness & Homelessness Featuring Lauren Hope & La Shawn Paul

The Connection Between Mental Illness & Homelessness Featuring Lauren Hope & La Shawn Paul

What do you do when you have a rising career as a news reporter, in a depressive episode and become homeless? Well, that is the story of Lauren Hope of Good Girl Chronicles. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 20 to 25% of the homeless population in the United States suffers from some form of severe mental illness. Serious mental illnesses disrupt people’s ability to carry out essential aspects of daily life, such as self-care and household management. Mental illnesses may also prevent people from forming and maintaining stable relationships or cause people to misinterpret others’ guidance and react irrationally. This often results in pushing away caregivers, family, and friends who may be the force keeping that person from becoming homeless. As a result, these factors and the stresses of living with a mental disorder, people with mentally illnesses are much more likely to become homeless than the general population. In this episode, Kea interviewed Lauren and learns more about her story, and the connection between mental illness and homelessness. During the mind, body and soulness segment, La Shawn Paul of Social Work Diva offers insight on how to unpack trauma such as homelessness. Raw, Real, Relatable

I remember meeting you maybe 4 years ago now. When I met you, you began to tell me your story, at the time, I didn’t realize the importance of mental health, nor did I know what mental health was. I also didn’t believe just anyone could fall victim to a mental illness/episode, etc. God redirected me to your podcast at the beginning of this week. Your story is compelling! Listeners are given that tunnel of hope by relating to you and your story. I love that you have real, raw conversations about your life-experiences. I hope you are able to keep the podcast going on a biweekly basis!

Transparency at its finest!

I don’t recall how I came across this podcast but I’m so glad I did. It is an awesome mental health resource for survivors as well as caregivers. The transparency that is shown from Kea and her guests is very needed and appreciated. Thank you, Kea for being open and continuing to spread mental health awareness.

It's Like Having Company From a Non-Judgmental Friend

I can't remember how I ran into T-Kea's podcast, but I know that it stemmed from Twitter. Her support, encouragement and praise for individuals pushing and getting through and to the otherside of darkness has been so pure on social media. We've even messaged back and forth when I questioned going back to medication. The dark place got darker just before my 27th birthday... I saught the highest level of support and that was hospitalization. Imagine feeling so low that you can't tolerate listening to music. On my commute to my program after being discharged from the hospital, I would listen to her. It felt as if she was in the car with me. My loneliness was so strong that I didn't want to be around others, but T-Kea really got me through and her amazing guests.

Send this pod to a friend, they might need it or they can even help someone else in need with the information and resources.
