My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
"Maybe there won't be marriage, maybe there won't be sex, but by God there'll be dancing." We’re wrapping up Wedding Month with one of the greatest rom-coms of all time, My Best Friend’s Wedding. It stars Julia Roberts as Julianne, a 27-year-old food critic who made a pact with her dude bff (Dermot Mulroney) that if they aren’t married by the time they turn the ripe old age of 28, they’ll get married to each other. Surprise, though—he’s engaged to a 20-year-old Cameron Diaz, so now Julianne must sabotage the wedding! Costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (Oceans Eleven, Tenet, Erin Brockovich) put Roberts in custom-made masculine silhouettes in muted hues, while Diaz is in colorful, uber preppy, Lilly Pulitzer-esque looks. We also discuss favorite perfumes (Fenty), this wild season of Atlanta, Blaire’s obsession with haupia pudding, and coin a new handbag trend: BPE (Big Purse Energy).

27 Dresses
“The best thing is you can shorten it and wear it again.” If you’ve ever had to wear a hideous bridesmaids dress, you might appreciate today’s episode on 27 Dresses, the 2008 wedding rom-com starring Katherine Heigl as a woman who is “always the bridesmaid, never the bride”— quite literally, 27 times. Costumes were by Catherine Marie Thomas (Kill Bill, The Proposal, The Flight Attendant) who designed the titular dresses that were so distinct and over-the-top, they received special nicknames from Thomas and her team, ranging from Gone With the Wind trash-fabulous, to a bright yellow “Peep’s Dress,” a hot pink, ruffled “Bahama Mama,” and more. Other callouts: goth Krysten Ritter, Judy Greer as a scene-stealing BFF, hottie James Marsden.

Music Minisode: Sade "No Ordinary Love" (1992)
We’re continuing with our wedding season theme with our music minisode pick: Sade’s 1992 hit “No Ordinary Love.” Directed by Sophie Muller, we watch our forever style icon Sade invoke her inner Ariel and portray a mermaid who falls in love with a hunky, Jean Paul Gaultier-esque sailor. She then decides to sew herself a marabou trim wedding dress and grow some legs to find him on land and runs barefoot through the New York City streets! There are only two looks, but they are inspirational!

Marry Me (2022)
What's a wedding rom-com theme without a J.Lo movie? We've got her newest, Marry Me up on the menu and one thing's for sure—this ain't no Wedding Planner when it comes to costumes, meaning it's a true feast for the eyes! Caroline Duncan (The Affair, Servant, Old) put Jennifer Lopez in a rose-gold metallic Zuhair Murad bridal gown that weighed 95 pounds, as well as a ton of other glorious designer looks, no doubt inspired by her real-life style. (Shoutout to her stylists Rob and Mariel!) Tune in now to hear our fave looks from this sweet 'lil movie.

Bride Wars (2009)
We're kicking off our first wedding month —that's right, we're doing all wedding-themed movies (who are we?)—with Bride Wars, a 2009 friend-com that stars two childhood besties (Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway) who declare war on each other when they end up booking their weddings on the same date. June at the Plaza! Costume designer Karen Patch (whose work we discussed on our recent Royal Tenenbaums episode) tapped Vera Wang (OBV) for the gowns, and since it's 2009 we get a lot of big belts and big tote bags! Enjoy!

Minisode: Missy Elliott 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)' (1997)
Grab your Hefty bags, Fishies, 'cause it's time for us to show some RESPEK to one of the greatest music videos of all time: Missy Elliott's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," which came out 25 years ago this May. That garbage bag/Michelin man look that's burned in our minds was by June Ambrose (who also did our fave Belly). This was peak Hype Williams era, so we're blessed with his trademark fisheye lens which gloriously highlights Missy's iconic makeup (which was done by Billy B) and those Alain Mikli glasses. Enjoy this fun music minisode!
