The Amazing Benefits of Rucking with Jason McCarthy of GoRuck

Jason McCarthy never set out to start an outdoor gear company. After university, he decided to serve in the US army, where he eventually became a Green Beret across Iraq, West Africa, and Europe.

While serving in the Army Special Forces, McCarthy started making go-backs, now known as a go-ruck, for his friends and family who were stationed in high-danger zones. In 2008, he transitioned out of the Army and began searching for his next challenge.

His wife told him to ‘do the go-ruck thing.’ The ‘go-ruck thing’ turned into GORUCK, a gear company that empowers real world communities to something greater than themselves.

In addition to building some of the most durable and versatile gear in the industry, GORUCK emphasizes its commitment to community through events, GORUCK clubs, and content creation.

In this episode of the Fit Over Thirty Podcast, we’re joined by founder and CEO Jason McCarthy to discuss the importance and value of community, the benefits of rucking for body mind and soul, and how rucking was the foundation of his special forces training.

Conditioning vs Strength: What’s More Important?

What is more important? Strength training, or conditioning? That’s the million-dollar question and recently a great coach asked if the fitness industry should really refer to “Strength and Conditioning” as “Conditioning and Strength”. We examine this topic and share our thoughts and explain to everyday athletes over 30, which one is more important for them.

How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Holiday weight gain is a common concern for many adults.

Various seasonal holidays may encourage overeating, sedentary behavior, and consumption of calorie-rich foods. In fact, between mid-November and mid-January, adults in Western societies gain an average of 1 pound (0.5 kg) (1Trusted Source).

This may not seem like a lot, but most people don’t lose this extra baggage. Therefore, holidays — no matter the time of year — may be one of the biggest contributors to your total annual weight gain.

That said, holiday weight gain is not inevitable, and this week, we share a case study of how James Breese actually lost over 2kg whilst on holiday, without worrying about what he ate, or how much!

A Life Lived Well

I love the message Strength Matters delivers through the Fit Over 30 Podcast. It’s more focused on living the life you want and how making health and fitness a priority in your life can allow you more freedom to do things you want without worrying so much about if you are capable, will get hurt, or might have pain. As a fitness professional for over 16 years now, I think this podcast most aligns with helping you get more out of life rather than making your whole life all about gym time and reaching some goal that isn’t even yours. I am Fit Over 30 and loving it! Thanks for spreading your message and helping me focus on a life well-lived and well-enjoyed.
